Sons of Eden co-owners, Corey Ryan (“cut his teeth” as winemaker at Henschke for 10 yrs) winemaker and Simon Cowham (ex-viticulturist Yalumba) can do no wrong! Amazing old vine shiraz (1.5 tonne/acre) produced from their 50 year old Eden valley vineyard (500 meters above sea level gives cooler ripening season) produces shiraz with superb aromatics, intensity and finesse. 22 months in French oak .. From the winemaker … The story behind the label: “A story that has intrigued us for years is the fable of the legendary founders of Ancient Rome, Romulus and Remus. These twins were abandoned at birth and reared by a she-wolf. Romulus murdered his twin in a fit of rage over the naming of Rome, the city which both had built. Legend presents Romulus as the stronger, more powerful of the brothers, while Remus was more refined, focussed and elegant. We believe the twins’ characterise the distinctive and unique flavours and attributes of Shiraz from the twin valleys – the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley.”
This is my favourite Sons wine because of its iron fist in a velvet glove character. Decant this wine for at least two hours or cellar for 10 years! Built to last! Deep inky purple in colour with bright crimson hues this wine has a combination of dark cherry and complex spicy aromas. The palate displays layers of berry fruit character with naunces of dried herb contributing to complexity. Velvety tannins and a core strength of flavour persists through the length of the palate. Do not miss out …
97 points, James Halliday, 01/5/17 “50+yo vines, mostly destemmed and crushed into small open fermenters, some batches including whole bunches, cold soak, hand-plunged, an extended period on skins, matured in French hogsheads (45% new) for 22 months. The bouquet’s harmony of red and black fruits and oak aromas flow into the medium-bodied palate, perfectly ripened shiraz standing proudly centre stage. Secondary, savoury notes to get air time, but the core is this beautifully detailed and supple palate of red and black cherry fruit, elegance the last thought.”
95 points, Huon Hooke … May 2016 in New & Noteworthy. Ranked #1 of 50 2014 Shiraz tasted from Barossa.
“This latest tasting of 140 young shirazes has many highlights, one of which was Sons Of Eden. Their 2014
and 2013 releases were all impressive. If you like big, rich, dark-coloured, dense Barossa and Eden Valley shiraz,
this little Barossa based winery is hard to look past. Romulus is the Barossa old vine shiraz; Remus is the Eden
Valley equivalent. Both are exceptional.
Very deep red/purple colour, the bouquet rich and chocolate-ripe, bright and concentrated, deep and plush with fleshy extract aplenty and loads of soft tannin and alcohol. The wine is very full-bodied, concentrated and plush – power-packed but with remarkable softness of texture. A terrific shiraz.”
95 points, Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine August 2016 … “The very deep red-purple colour mirrors a concentrated, full-bodied, plush-textured wine loaded with chocolate and black fruit flavours, great power and remarkable softness, opulence and balance. The texture is a highlight. A terrific shiraz”
