Description
Award winning family owned and operated boutique winery Frankland Estate is located in Frankland River, the coolest and most isolated wine-growing region in Western Australia. Warm days, cool nights (maritime influenced by the proximity to the Great Southern Ocean – means milder summers and winters) optimum ripening conditions, sustainable organic practices and a pristine pollution free environment are all contributing factors to the fine wines it produces.
About this wine from the winemaker: “Fruit for this wine was sourced from three different locations in the Isolation Ridge vineyard at Frankland Estate. The vineyard is planted on undulating northern and eastern facing slopes and has duplex soils of ironstone gravel and loam over a clay sub soil. A combination of the original 1988 ‘Houghtons’ Clone plantings as well as the newer Hermitage Clone 470. Organic certification achieved on these vineyards since 2009.
“This wine is 95% Syrah with 1.5% Viognier and 3.5% Mourvèdre. 5% whole bunches are included, carefully sourced from among two blocks where the stems turn yellow as ripeness is achieved. Aromatics and tannin complexity result from the whole bunch. 85% of the blend is from the original 1988-planted winery block. 10% is our younger 470 clone which brings more complexity and another dimension to the tannin profile. The 470 also reaches the ripeness we are happy with at slightly lower sugar levels (typically 1.0 Be less sugar), Mourvèdre and co fermented Viognier add complexity of flavour and texture while Syrah remains the hero. Our aim is delicacy with power. The wine was matured for 14 months in 3,500-litre French Oak foudre and a few additional 500-litre puncheons.
2024 Isolation Ridge Syrah, a cool climate Syrah of elegance and poise. Red fruited and medium weight, makes you want to go back for another glass.
96 points, Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate “The 2024 Isolation Ridge Syrah leads with an abundance of rose petals, violet, cherry blossom, pink peppercorn and ironstone. The palate is gravelly, open-weave and silky and emphasizes the perfume on the nose. This is routinely a wine of contrasts, and I love that about it. It is both floral and bloody, gritty and sleek, but most of all, it tastes of the place from which it comes: Frankland River. This is a place of sunny days and cold nights, high natural acidity, gravel loam soils and wide-open skies—a place as pretty as the wine. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.”
96 points, Angus Hughson, Wine Pilot “This 2024 Syrah Isolation Ridge shows impressive poise and subtlety with savoury, aged spice and dark earth against a backdrop of blackberry, with excellent fruit definition. Very youthful with a firm base of gravelly tannins while the fresh, integrated acidity is well balanced with layers of cherry compote, earth and spice. There is a charming tension and vitality, a long, fine and streamlined finish showcasing serious potential to flower in a bottle. Still tightly bound, this needs years but is destined for great things. A benchmark Frankland River Shiraz.”
95 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion “Highly appealing, thanks to the gorgeous colour, heady aromas and plush palate. Floral and spicy with a dash of pepper, fresh herbs and a ferrous influence. There’s a plushness across the fuller-bodied palate as it unfurls, offering dark fruits, textural tannins and fine acidity.”
94 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “Pretty aromatics and a well-composed, mid-weight palate, lead to well sustained finish. Everything here feels impeccably placed. Cherry-plum flavours, roasted peanuts, peppercorns and an array of dried herbs. There’s an aspect of velvet to the texture but overall it feels fresh and energetic. This wine is still properly finding its feet but it will be beautiful in time.”
