Sons of Eden are rising stars of the Barossa. Co-owners, Corey Ryan (“cut his teeth” as winemaker at Henschke for 10 yrs) winemaker and Simon Cowham (ex-viticulturist Yalumba) can do no wrong!
Freya was the foremost legendary Goddess of ancient Germanic lands where the Riesling grape originated. This single vineyard wine honours early German settlers who cultivated the Riesling vine in the exemplary micro-climate of South Australia’s Eden Valley.
In 2017 a mild to warm summer lead to a late start to harvest, almost 1 month later than in 2016. The Riesling vintage in Eden Valley enjoyed fine, dry conditions with warm days and cool evenings. These climatic conditions ensured a long slow ripening, perfect for flavour development and for retention of high natural acidity. Fruit comes from a combination of 43 year vines in the Craneford sub-region and 19 year old vines in the High Eden sub region – both cooler parts of the Eden Valley.
Alluring citrus lemon, grapefruit and lavender aromas are complemented by the hallmark Eden Valley zest and crunchy acidity on the palate. A delicious wine, approachable upon release this wine will also mature very well for many years to come. Cellar up to 2037 but why wait it is drinking beautifully now! Alc 12.5%
95 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “They know how to turn out fine Eden Riesling at SOE. Jasmine and vanilla perfume, lemon and lime, but delivered sotto voce, a certain mineral oil thing. It’s light, but full of flavour, with a juiciness and mouth-perfume, crunch of acidity and dusting of chalky texture, and a lovely grip and lime rind thing on the long, and very convincing finish. Beauty.”
93 points, James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2019 “The bouquet and palate overflow with signature Eden Valley fruit, rising to a crescendo on the finish and aftertaste. Needs a couple of years under its belt to slim down.”
