Description

Sons of Eden co-owners, Corey Ryan (“cut his teeth” as winemaker at Henschke for 10 years) winemaker and Simon Cowham (ex-viticulturist Yalumba) have come up trumps again!

This wine is so damn good it reminds us why we love the wine business! A superb example of Barossa Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre blend – Named as a tribute to the legendary Barossa Vigneron’s who pioneered the planting of the old treasured vineyards, which the Barossa enjoys today. The Grenache fruit is the ‘soul’ of this blend and is from an exceptionally low yielding 60+ year-old Light Pass and a 100+ year old Rowland Flat vineyard. Originally planted by the Kennedy Family, with ownership eventually being passed onto the charismatic Leo ‘Joe’ KENNEDY who nurtured the vines for many years, selling his prized fruit to local winemakers.

The 2022 vintage comprises Grenache 56%, Shiraz 25% and Mourvedre 19% matured in seasoned French hogsheads and puncheons for 16 months. 14.5% alcohol. It is a labour of love making this wine … ancient vines, minuscule yields of 1.25- 2 tons/acre (Light Pass, Rowland Flat, Nuriootpa, Seppeltsfield, Moppa), handpicking and traditional small batch winemaking followed by 16 months maturation in used French oak. Intensely concentrated wild berry dark cherry fruit, spice, tarry depth and silky tannins.

Deep crimson in colour this wine has vibrant aromas of raspberries that lead to alluring and complex spice and plum characters. The palate displays concentrated red fruit characters together with complementing sweet spice flavours. Soft and velvety tannins persist the length of the palate that finishes with a subtle savoury nuance.

It certainly lives up to all the many award winning previous vintages…we haven’t seen anything that gets close to the extraordinary quality and value GSM offered here.

94 points, Ryan Montgomery for James Suckling:Deeply scented with perfumed aromas of blackberries, violets, blood plums and dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and focused acidity, giving notes of raspberries, dark cherries, ferric earth and cured meat. Very well balanced and supple with a savory undertone.”

93 points, Dave Brookes for 2024 Halliday Wine Companion “A beautifully bright, spacey and detailed blend of 56/25/19% grenache/shiraz/mourvédre with a snappy minerally line, chewy, powdered granite tannins and loads of bright red berry raspberry and red plummy fruit. Spicy, too, with a gentle floral facet, gingerbread notes and a really easy-drinking vibe. I like it a lot.
