Description

Sons of Eden co-owners, Corey Ryan (“cut his teeth” as winemaker at Henschke for 10 yrs) winemaker and Simon Cowham (ex-viticulturist Yalumba) can do no wrong!

About this wine from the winemakers: “To qualify for the Remus blend the vineyards need to be over 50 years of age and managed sustainably.  Shiraz fruit from 80+ year old vineyards in Central Eden Valley sub-region of Eden Valley and 80+ year old vineyard in Flaxmans Valley sub-region, Eden Valley

The story behind the label:  A story that has intrigued us for years is the fable of the legendary founders of Ancient Rome, Romulus and Remus. These twins were abandoned at birth and reared by a she-wolf. Romulus murdered his twin in a fit of rage over the naming of Rome, the city which both had built. Legend presents Romulus as the stronger, more powerful of the brothers, while Remus was more refined, focussed and elegant. We believe the twins’ characterise the distinctive and unique flavours and attributes of Shiraz from the twin valleys – the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley.”

The 2022 vintage was exceptional for the old vine Shiraz vineyards which produced elegant wines of great complexity capable of maturing very well for many years.

“Hand harvested, destemmed and crushed into small 1.5 tonne open-top fermenters. Selected fermenters had up to 15% whole-bunch clusters added to the destemmed berries. A pre-fermentation cold soak ensured a slow initiation to fermentation, where temperatures were allowed to peak at 27oC before being cooled to 20oC for the remainder of the fermentation. Hand plunged daily allowed for a gentle extraction and helped to prolong the fermentation. After an extended period on skins the ferments were pressed to 60% new French oak hogsheads. Matured and not racked throughout the 18-month oak-maturation period provided for palate weight and texture.

“Vibrant wild berry and subtle sweet spice notes infuse the aroma. The generous palate displays juicy dark cherry fruits and complex dried herbal notes intertwine with enduring silky tannins. A refined and elegant example of Eden Valley old vine Shiraz that will mature gracefully for many years to come.”

This is my favourite Sons wine because of its iron fist in a velvet glove character.  Superbly elegant and gorgeously balanced.. Do not miss out on this beauty!

97 Points, The Vintage Journal (Andrew Caillard MW & Ken Garrett)
Deep crimson. Raspberry, blackberry mocha aromas with marzipan, hint bush garrigue notes. Richly flavoured wine, the plentiful red and dark berry fruits, perfectly ripe, gravelly tannins and underlying chinotto notes. Very expressive and beautifully balanced wine.

97 Points, Wine Orbit (Sam Kim)
The bouquet is immensely seductive and inviting with blackberry, bouquet garni, cedar, cured meat, and rich floral notes. The palate is powerful with finesse, exhibiting remarkable weight and depth. The mouthfeel flows seamlessly, complemented by finely integrated tannins. This wine beautifully combines exceptional fruit purity with enticing complexity, leaving a long and gratifying finish.

96 Points, The Real Review (Huon Hooke)
Very deep, concentrated, dense purple-red colour; a massively rich cocoa/chocolate/mocha bouquet together with plum conserve and blackberry jam flavours. The palate is densely packed with hedonistic, profound and concentrated flavour that persists long through the finish and follow-through. Sweet jammy core. This is long-term and will richly reward cellaring.

96 Points, Halliday (Dave Brookes)
Deep, resonant and gloriously pure, with elegant blackberry and dark plum fruits. Hints of brown spice, sage, cedar, dark chocolate, violets. licorice, crushed herbs and crushed stone. The fruit weight is bang on the money, the fine-grained tannins are toothsome and nicely integrated, and the finish is long and rich. The cellaring potential is very promising here.
