Description

Established in 1981, the winery is situated in the historic township of Auburn at the southern tip of the Clare Valley.  Remaining small and focused has allowed Grosset Wines to preserve the character and individuality of the wines, developing a significant international profile by producing wines deemed consistently outstanding, benchmarks in their class.
Jeffrey Grosset, owner and founder, has always been an innovator, challenging tradition and questioning accepted practices. He campaigned to institute the legal integrity of the riesling grape in Australia, was a leading proponent for the introduction of screwcap closures and privately funded research into the subject.
The emphasis is on purity of fruit. The estate vineyards, which are ACO certified organic, are hand tended and each bunch of grapes is harvested at optimum ripeness. The winemaking process is gentle and uncomplicated. With dedication, discipline and the application of knowledge garnered through decades of experience, the result is the finest expression of variety and place.

Jeffrey Grosset is internationally recognised as one of the ‘Top 10 White Winemakers’ (Decanter, UK) and one of the ‘50 Most Influential Winemakers’ (Wine & Spirits, USA) in the world today. Grosset Polish Hill is produced exclusively from the eight-hectare estate-owned Polish Hill Vineyard in the Clare Valley.  The gently sloping site is comprised of silt and shallow shales over a thin crust of clay and gravel. This overlays a bed of blue slate, estimated to be around 500-million-years old.
This single-site wine epitomises riesling from the Watervale sub-region. One of ‘Australia’s Five Most Collected White Wines’ (Wine Ark), rated ‘Outstanding’ by Langton’s Wine Classification.

About this wine from the winemaker  “The 2025 Grosset Springvale Riesling showcases lively intensity with quintessential Clare Valley character – pure lemon-lime aromatics that fill the mid-palate with remarkable depth and power. Mouth-puckering and bone-dry, this wine delivers fine structure and a lingering, sumptuous finish that speaks to the quality of fruit achieved. Despite a warm, dry and early season, biodynamic farming and holistic vineyard management created almost oasis-like conditions at Springvale. This careful stewardship delivered pristine, flavoursome grapes from the vineyard’s distinctive red loam-over-limestone and slate soils. The result perfectly balances the site’s natural generosity with crystalline purity, demonstrating how sustainable viticulture can triumph over challenging vintage conditions to produce exceptional Clare Valley Riesling. Produced from riesling grown biodynamically at the Grosset Springvale Vineyard.”

2nd Most Collected Riesling – Australia’s Most Collected Wines 2024, Wine Ark

96 Points, Mike Bennie, Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion “This was tasted in the full vigour of its youth, and yet there’s an approachability and ease of drinking here. This has lemon-lime fruit as an underpinning, green apple crunch, a talc and brine-like mineral combination, some green herbs and a dash of tonic water, too. It’s compact and yet holds a juiciness at its core; the big reveal is just how much flavour is packed in here. There’s a wet river pebble feel to texture. Very classic in its feel; a class act.”

96 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “You get flashy aromatics, mid-palate fruit flesh and intensity, and a penetrating drive of flavour through the finish. This wine is only a few months old but already, it offers a lot. It will get better. Lime juice, grapefruit, citrus peel, a keen Riverstone character and exquisite length. This is textbook in the best of ways.”

96 points, James Suckling “… the palate is fine and racy, with bright acidity and a mineral-edged finish that persists into a long, pure and mouthwatering close. Excellent.”

95 points, Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate Taut and thrumming aromatically: notes of lemon zest, talc, scratched soapstone and white flowers predominate. In the mouth, the wine is fleshy in its fruit profile yet austere in its acid attack, and together, these make for an awkward pairing in youth. Like a successful arranged marriage, these two extremes will eventually unite, bringing together the best of the warm days and the cold nights that were experienced early in the growing season. The 2025 season rolled out with extremely dry conditions, which was felt right across the South Australian state. For those who were able to coax and manage their vineyards through these challenging conditions, the wines are fantastic and, like this Springvale Riesling, will show themselves to be excellent in years to come. I’d be inclined to allow this a year or so of grace in the cellar prior to embarking.”
