Pooley Wines has an historical property and two separate vineyards in the Coal River Valley in southern Tasmania. The Coal River Valley has developed a worldwide reputation, and is ideally suited, for the production of cool-climate wines such as Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay. Members of the Pooley family have been actively involved in the business for three generations. Their longstanding passion and commitment to fine wine are your assurance of un-compromising quality.
Pooley Wines was established in 1985 when the late Denis and Margaret Pooley planted ten rows of Riesling and seven rows of Pinot Noir on their 16-hectare farm at Cooinda Vale in the Coal River Valley in southern Tasmania. In 2003, John Pooley, son of Denis and Margaret, and his wife Libby bought Belmont Lodge, a heritage-listed Georgian home on the outskirts of Richmond. They have been lovingly renovating this second Pooley Wines Coal River Valley property, and have planted vines on nearby Butchers Hill. In 2007 the first vintage of Pinot was produced.
As well as the Winery of the Year accolade, they have 5 Red Stars from James Halliday and Tasmania’s Winery and Pinot Noir Producer of the Year in 2012, Pooley is also Tasmania’s first and only fully accredited Environmentally Certified Sustainable Vineyard in Tasmania.
About this wine from the winemakers: “Riesling is a cool-climate specialty for Pooley Wines, consistently sourced from our Coal River Valley vineyards (Butcher’s Hill and Cooinda Vale). Our winemaking is geared toward preserving the intense natural acidity and aromatic purity of the fruit. The wine is made entirely in stainless steel and undergoes brief maturation on fine lees to add subtle texture while keeping it vibrant. This results in a bright, energetic, and highly cellarable Riesling that showcases classic citrus and floral notes and a long, clean finish.
“Incredibly aromatic with classic notes of lime zest, green apple, and a hint of white floral. The palate is bone dry, with a vibrant and zesty acidity that is a hallmark of cool-climate Riesling. Flavours of juicy citrus and green apple persist on the palate, leading to a long and refreshing finish. This Riesling’s zesty acidity and citrus notes make it a perfect match for spicy Asian cuisine, such as Thai green curry or Vietnamese pho. It also pairs beautifully with sushi and sashimi, as well as lighter poultry dishes.”

Pale straw with aromas of crunchy Granny Smith apple, grapefruit and lime. Hints of white flowers and clover blossom, crushed stone, lanolin, some distant crushed herbs and sea spray. Tightly focused with a stony mineral resolve on the palate, finishing crisp, bone dry and with a light ache of umami.”
