Sons of Eden co-owners, Corey Ryan (“cut his teeth” as winemaker at Henschke for 10 yrs) winemaker and Simon Cowham (ex-viticulturist Yalumba) can do no wrong! Amazing old vine shiraz (1.5 tonne/acre) produced from their 50 year old Eden valley vineyard (500 meters above sea level gives cooler ripening season) produces shiraz with superb aromatics, intensity and finesse. 22 months in French oak .. From the winemaker … The story behind the label: “A story that has intrigued us for years is the fable of the legendary founders of Ancient Rome, Romulus and Remus. These twins were abandoned at birth and reared by a she-wolf. Romulus murdered his twin in a fit of rage over the naming of Rome, the city which both had built. Legend presents Romulus as the stronger, more powerful of the brothers, while Remus was more refined, focussed and elegant. We believe the twins’ characterise the distinctive and unique flavours and attributes of Shiraz from the twin valleys – the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley.”
This is my favourite Sons wine because of its iron fist in a velvet glove character. Decant this wine for at least two hours or cellar for 10 years! Built to last! Deep inky purple in colour with bright crimson hues this wine has a combination of dark cherry and complex spicy aromas. The palate displays layers of berry fruit character with naunces of dried herb contributing to complexity. Velvety tannins and a core strength of flavour persists through the length of the palate.
Do not miss out … minuscule production of this top shelf drop. Superb follow up to their multi award winning 2010 vintage.
96 points, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2015 “Deep colour; the cedary, savoury complexity of the wine is evident from the first whiff, the thumbprint of extended maturation in predominantly new French oak very obvious; that said, French oak is far more suited to the Eden Valley than is American, and the fruit density on the palate, combined with the fine, persistent tannins, validates the maturation programme. Quite simply, a great wine from a great vintage.”
95 Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front ..“Beautiful packaging on these wines, cork aside. Super smooth – vanilla crème deluxe, exotic spice, dark cherry and black fruit, subtle peppermint chocolate. Medium to full bodied, plushly fruited, silky smooth and rounded, ultra fine dense tannin, just-right acidity and a long spiced and lightly savoury finish. Immaculate. Top shelf.”
94+ Points, Jeremy Pringle, Wine Will Eat Itself … “Black cherry-berry and boysenberry fruits, pan juices and mint. Quality barrel influence is in no way disproportionate. Pepper, cloves, and nutmeg. Obscenely good shape through the mouth with supple and tight tannin pulling everything together. Masterful work.”
