Ca’ is short for casa – home. Ca’Romé is both home to winemaker Romano Marengo and family and to classic Piedmontese red wine-making at its finest. Located at the top of the Rabajà hill, Barbaresco’s historical cru, the house overlooks an endless vista of gently sloping Langhe country. The wines of Ca’Romé have impressive structure, body and cellar life and exquisitely fine perfume, elegance and balance. More traditional stylistically – predominantly large oak “botti”. The vineyards span five hectares, partly in Barbaresco, partly in Serralunga d’Alba in Barolo territory, and the average annual production is 2500 cases.
Their Barolos – Rapet and Cerretta – are both from Serralunga, where the wines’ magnitude and structure is conferred by the iron-rich soil. Cerretta is one of Serralunga’s designated crus, and the vines – planted in 1961 – yield a very low crop. It offers excellent concentration of rich, dark fruit with notes of tobacco, licorice, roses, violets and vanilla. The palate is long and persistent with smooth, velvety tannins and great structure for decades of cellaring.
Antoni Galloni, the world’s leading authority on Barolo describes the 2010 vintage: “Simply put, 2010 is the greatest young Barolo vintage I have tasted in 18 years of visiting the region and a lifetime of buying, cellaring and drinking these wines. The 2010 Barolos have all of the attributes of a cool, late-ripening vintage; expressive aromatics, chiseled fruit, plenty of site-specificity and the potential to develop beautifully for years and decades in bottle. At the same time, the wines have gorgeous depth and richness, perhaps a result of the high temperatures in July.”
93+ points Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media “The 2010 Barolo Vigna Cerretta floats on the palate with an attractive melange of sweet red cherries, savory herbs, wild flowers and fennel. The Vigna Cerretta is darker and more vibrant than the Rapèt, but, it, too is impeccable in its balance. Hints of dark cherry, plum, tobacco and menthol flesh out on the finish. Overall, this is a fairly delicate style for Cerretta and Serralunga, but it all works.
