For the past four generations, the Vietti family has been producing wine in Castiglione Falletto, a small village in the heart of the Langhe region of Piedmont, from their vineyards located across the five communes designated for the cultivation and production of Barolo. Over recent years Luca Currado-Vietti had taken over the winemaking direction from his late father Alfredo. The overall objective, to produce the highest quality wines, whilst retaining respect for the traditions of the specific appellations.
About this wine: The Perbacco is made from 100% Nebbiolo parcels all planted in the Barolo region from vines (average 35 years old) from Barolo sites: Bricco Boschis, Liste, Brunella, Rocchettevino, Pernanno, Ravera di Monforte and Scarrone. Fruit selection here was more open and approachable than that selected for Barolo followed by 2 years maturation in Slavonian oak botti cask. Luca gives this extraordinary Perbacco all the love and attention in the vineyard with the same yields, vinification and aging period as for their Barolo Castiglione.
The grapes for this wine are grown in various selected vineyards sites mostly in the Barolo area and a minor part in Barbaresco. The vineyards soil is made of marl (lime stone in combination with clay). Alcoholic fermentation lasts around 3/4 weeks at controlled temperature (28°-32°C). Then we have the malolactic fermentation in steel tanks. Each parcel is processed and aged separately until when they select the ones will be included for the blend of Perbacco or the ones that will keep ageing to become Barolo Castiglione (excluding the parcels from Barbaresco).
Sourced from predominantly 100% Barolo vineyards (usually younger vine than those directed to their flagship Barolo Castiglione) and in recent years there has been the inclusion of small parcel of younger vine Barbaresco fruit. The Perbacco is based on a core of Ravera (Novello) blended with: Bricco Ravera, Ginestra & Mosconi (Monforte d’Alba); Le Coste (Barolo), Costabelle & Meriame (Serralunga d’Alba) Briccolina & Briccho Boschis & Codana (Castiglione Falletto).
About this wine from the winemaker “Fruity with hints of mint, spices and raspberry. Round, elegant tannins add to a long, refined finish. Robust, intense, powerful in youth; complex, elegant with ageing.
“The 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco is a fine entry-level wine in this range. Crushed red berry fruit, chalk, mint, white pepper and orange peel give the 2023 lovely aromatic top notes. This is the first vintage that includes a newly acquired parcel on the lower part of Ravera.
