Trediberri translates in italiano as the three from Berri (a little hamlet of La Morra, the highest town in Barolo and renowned for wines of elegance and refinement).
Father and son team Frederico & Nicola Oberto and friend Vladimiro Rambaldi (a banker) make up the trio and back in 2008 they purchased 5ha of Berri vineyards in La Morra. Anna Rosa Oberto (wife/mother) is also hands on pruning vines fastidiously when not working at the post office. The Oberto family also have 2ha of one of premium Barolo cru: Rocche dell’Annunziata. Their new winery in the village of Torriglione overlooks the vineyard.
Nic Oberto oversees the winemaking at Trediberri with his father Federico (following his retirement from Renato Ratti after several decades) and Enologist Livio Taretto, and Nic’s fiancée Stefania Drocco, plays an increasingly important role in the overall Trediberri story. Since 2012 Trediberri winery has been certified by CCPB srl, Bologna as in conversion to organic.
About this wine from the winemakers: “Our Barolo of the Comune of La Morra is the result of the blending of the grapes from all our vineyards. This blend represents the best solution within more complicated vintages, when the single parcels are unable to give the maximum in terms of quality and health. By blending all our different parcels, we try to produce a wine, which is as reliable as possible to the vintage and which can combine the elegance and fruity profile of the less important vineyards with the depth and the austerity coming from our best parcels. The Barolo of the Comune of La Morra is a fresh and immediate wine, but it has the potential to age for a long time, thanks to its acidity and freshness.
“This wine represents the vinification of the grapes coming from all our plots within the Village of La Morra. The alcoholic fermentation begins with an indigenous pied de cuve; it takes place in cement and it lasts about 12-14 days. It is followed by a postfermentation maceration of about 4-5 days, in order to arrive to a skin-juice contact of about 3 weeks. After racking, the malolactic fermentation takes place in steel and cement and then the aging in wood lasts for about 20 months in 25 HL and 52 HL Garbellotto barrels. Afterwards, the wine is transferred to concrete and steel for a few months before being bottled, usually in mid-April of the year before it is released on the market.”
93 points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate “The Trediberri 2022 Barolo del Comune di La Morra shows a beautiful quality of fruit, with sweet cherry, redcurrant and a soft, delicate character that is understated to the best effect. Although lighter in color, the wine is lush, supple and unmistakably La Morra in personality, capturing the warmth of this hot, dry vintage with terrific clarity. I especially appreciate the interplay between sweet and savory elements. Produced from a blend of 82% Berri and 18% Rocche dell’Annunziata after the estate elected not to bottle its two single-vineyard Barolos separately, this wine is conceived with drinkability in mind. The finish is marked by fine, powdery tannins with a subtle chalky edge, reflecting the slightly uneven phenolic ripeness of the vintage.”
93 points, Michaela Morris, Decanter “The Oberto family bottled one single Barolo in 2022. It largely features their vineyards in the cool, late-ripening Berri sub-district. Holdings in Rocche dell’Annunziata represent approximately 18% of the blend. A quiet charmer, this boasts precision and purity as its strengths. Scents of cranberry, redcurrant, pepper and brushwood take some coaxing. The palate is tightly knit and slender but well-endowed with flavours of juicy red berries and cardamom. Lively acidity meets al dente tannins. Do not take this for a pushover.”
