Freya was the foremost legendary Goddess of ancient Germanic lands where the Riesling grape originated. This single vineyard wine honours early German settlers who cultivated the Riesling vine in the exemplary micro-climate of South Australia’s Eden Valley.
The Freya Cellar Release programme began in 2005, with small parcels of Freya Eden Valley Riesling being held back from each harvest and matured in our ideal cellaring conditions. With careful bottle maturation Eden Valley Riesling evolves gracefully and this programme ensures maturing Rieslings can be enjoyed upon release.
There are three Eden Valley Riesling Vineyards that contribute to the Freya blend. All are situated within the cooler parts of Eden Valley and have east-west row orientations. The vineyards are all hand-harvested in the cool of the morning and then chilled to a further 6C before being processed.
Vintage 2016 .. A near perfect ripening season punctuated with weeks of warm dry days and typical cool Eden Valley nights lead to a slow but steady flavour development and generous levels of natural acidity.
Olive green with straw flecks in colour, the citrus-blossom bouquet is surrounded by a complex array of spiced baked apple, lightly toasted oats, and a whiff of white smoke. The palate is equally intriguing with a beautiful balance, freshness, and intensity of flavour. The wine is developing a lovely depth of flavour with a long and lingering finish, and with further careful cellaring this wine will continue to acquire more complexity and enticing layers.
