James Kellie (formerly of Howard Park) has had extraordinary success in a relatively short time, winning trophies galore and for 10 consecutive years the elusive 5 red star rating (the highest recognition possible from James Halliday’s, Wine Companion awarded to Australia’s top 5% of wineries for “a consistent record of excellence”.).
The Great Southern wine growing region of WA provides unmatched versatility and quality for a winemaker. The elegance and delicacy of cool climate Riesling is on show with James Kellie showcasing the subregional releases of Porongurups, Mt Barker and Denmark. These gorgeous dry Rieslings are as pristine and crystalline as the spectacularly beautiful and remote landscape.
From the winemaker: “The grapes for this wine were sourced from a single vineyard in the Mount Barker sub region of Western Australia’s Great Southern wine region. Only the finest, more pristine, “free-run” juice was used in the production of this wine resulting in a palate of outstanding finesse, free from the harsh, phenolic characters and deeper colours associated with grape pressings. A long, cool ferment in stainless steel tanks, minimal fining and the use of screw caps are all further steps towards capturing the inherent delicacy of this cool climate variety.”
A brilliant, exceptionally pale straw colour with youthful green tinges. The wine exhibits intense floral, citrus and talc notes enhanced by an underlying spicy vibrancy. A seamless palate, with initial flavours of passionfruit and mandarin leading to a spicy mid-palate with hints of nectarine finishing with classic mouth-watering citrus. The fine structure is testament to the care taken during this wines production.
Riesling of this pedigree and class is an absolute bargain.. Enjoy!
95 points, Erin Larkin for James Halliday’s 2022 Australian Wine Companion “This is pretty cool; flavour base of cheesecloth, salty saline acid, citrus pith and green apple skin. The fine, chalky phenolics on the palate elevate this into a very interesting space; softer and rounder than many Mount Barker rieslings, but that regional stamp of coiled acid remains entrenched in the fruit on the mid palate.”
92 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front “Bright, lemon on green apple vibes. Tension but with some yield and a little juiciness. A powder puff of minerally talc to finish. Lovely perfume, fresh and fragrant. Feels like no hair is out of place. Or hare. Just a delight.”
