Description
10th generation winemaker and native of Bordeaux, Dominique Portet is regarded as a pioneer of the renaissance of the Victorian Wine industry since 1976 when he was responsible for the renowned wines of Taltarni and Clover Hill. Establishing his own label in 2000 Dominique Portet with winemaker son Ben are now 10th generation winemakers going back to the 18th century. They now craft fine cool-climate wines in the Yarra Valley.
This comes from a single site in the Upper Yarra, three hundred metres off the Valley floor where the vines enjoy cooler nights and a lengthened growing season.
The fruit is picked relatively early in order to capitalise on that inherent freshness and to preserve a citrus driven fruit profile with lime and stone fruit in the background. Deft handling of lees and French puncheons adds texture and this is simply another great chardonnay.
95 points, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion “Hand-picked, chilled, whole-bunch pressed, fermented in French puncheons (40% new), matured for 9 months. Gleaming straw-green; a perfectly pitched chardonnay, the fruit midway between stone fruit and citrus, the oak largely absorbed by the fruit, providing texture as much as flavour.”
96 points, Aaron Brasher, The Real Review “Lifted, layered and complex aromas of grapefruit pith, struck-match, bacon fat, grilled nuts and nougat. The palate delivers big time: stone fruit, melon, nutty, mealy, minerally, textured and layered. There’s a whole lot going on here and it’s tres smart. Outstanding value.”
