“I cannot think of another New Zealand wine producer that has been making top wines across their entire range as consistently as Neudorf over three decades. Chardonnay is the star with Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc very close behind.” Bob Campbell MW
“One of New Zealand’s most admired producers. Tim and Judy Finn have a great track record.” Jancis Robinson MW, 2012
The pristine and spectacularly beautiful Nelson region in the south island of NZ and in particular the Clay Gravel Moutere Hills area receive lots of sun (more than 2300 hours a year) making it one of New Zealand’s sunniest regions a real bonus for such a cool climate region. Clear skies allow for rapid cooling at night, nurturing the slow development of flavours and a gradual reduction in fruit acids. This combination of climate and soil type produces white wines of concentration and texture, and rich savoury Pinot Noir with a fingerprint of textured minerally fruit acid.
Established in 1978 by Tim and Judy Finn, Neudorf use sustainable practices and the winery is accredited under the Sustainable Winery NZ scheme, which Tim was instrumental in establishing back in the early 80’s. Winemaker Todd Stevens aim is always to allow the site to speak. Great wines have a basis of fruit concentration, length and sense of place – characters which can be formed only in the vineyard.
About this wine from the winemaker: “The 2023-2024 growing season was splendid, marked by a welcome return to an El Nino weather pattern, and more stable weather conditions without dramatic temperature or rainfall extremes. Summer months were dry and warm but followed by an ‘autumnal’ finish to the season. A superb season producing wines with fruit intensity and poise.
“Partial whole bunch press. No or minimal settling. Partial Wild Yeast, high solid fermentation. Partial barrel fermentation, 10% new. French Oak – medium toast. 10 months on full lees with minimal battonage. Then followed by 2 months on fine lees in stainless steel tank.
“Juicy Summer stone fruits and a refreshing squeeze of citrus roll across the palate, layered with a salty, rockpool minerality and just a suggestion of oak. Subtle lees work adds roundness, giving the wine shape and volume while keeping it effortlessly fresh. It’s sleek, balanced and quietly complex – the kind of wine that feels indulgent, yet sits happily at the table any night of the week.”
93 points, “Excellent” Cam Douglas MS “Delicious, bright, fresh, fruity and ready to drink from 2025 through 2030. Aromas and flavours of yellow stone fruits and citrus peel, red apple and pineapple suggestions. Crisp, weighty, satin textured and dry. Some fine fruit and wood tannins and a backbone of acidity ensure this wines instant appeal from textures through fruit and Chardonnay appeal. Well made and ready.”
93 points, Shanteh Wale, Halliday Wine Companion “Sunflowers, marigold flowers and ripe lemon flesh. Peach fuzz and pineapple skin. Natural, elegant; a wine with real flow and innate chardonnay character. Oak supports the tropical and peach fruit well. Nutmeg and cinnamon quill spice. Great value wine from Nelson.”
93 points, James Suckling “A vibrant and racy chardonnay with aromas of white peaches, pineapple and savory hints of nougat and dried flowers. Bright, with a medium to full body and a juicy, crystalline flow. Pure and delicious, with a mineral ending.”
91 points, Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous Media “The 2024 Chardonnay Tiritiri is beautifully crafted. The palate is rich and impeccably balanced, with a line of unobtrusive but persistent acidity that provides focus and a clean finish. Fresh, ripe pineapple and pear come together with subtle vanilla pastry, and the finish is nicely drawn out. The 2024 is delightful from release and, while there’s no need to wait, this will drink well for the rest of the decade.”
