Description

Geoff and Susan Bull were early viticultural pioneers on the East Coast of Tasmania, establishing Freycinet Vineyard in 1979. It is situated adjacent to the picturesque Freycinet Peninsula, (latitude 42 degrees), which is named in honour of the French explorer Louis de Freycinet, who chartered the region in 1802. The 15 hectare vineyard is proudly family owned and the wines are 100% grown, produced and bottled on our estate. The site is a warm sheltered one within the truly cool Tasmanian climate. The vineyards are meticulously hand tended to grow moderate yields of fully ripe healthy fruit. The rustic winery houses ‘state of the art’ equipment to ensure wine quality is not lost. The wines are produced with great care, dedication and passion – they are a delicious liquid expression of our unique place on earth, the varieties and the season.

Winemaker notes about this wine: “Since 1990, Freycinet Chardonnay has repeatedly won high praise, being especially noted for its consistently high quality and age-worthiness. Pristine I10V5 clone Chardonnay fruit from our original 1979 own-rooted plantings is handpicked at optimal ripeness and whole-bunch pressed, followed by fermentation in French oak barriques. During maturation in barrel, regular bâtonnage is carried out to enhance the texture of the wine and balance the crystalline Tasmanian acidity.

“The vines began spring with a strong start after a typical winter of average temperatures and rainfall. Spring rainfall reached only 70% of the norm, though slightly warmer conditions prevailed. The warmth carried into summer, supported by well-timed rain. By the harvest months of March and April, rainfall had dropped to 60% of average and the season turned noticeably drier. The consistently warm weather promoted even ripening, while excellent flowering earlier in the season led to higher-than-usual yields. Overall, the season produced wellbalanced fruit of outstanding quality.

“Our Freycinet Chardonnay has subtle layers of complexity beneath aromas of melon, citrus blossom and finely integrated oak. The palate is powerful yet precise showing concentrated flavours of melon, grapefruit, nectarine and fig, supported by refined oak and a creamy seamlessly textured finish. This wine will evolve gracefully over 5 – 15 years.”

Newly released …. review for 2024 – 93 points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion “Light straw in the glass with aromas of white peach. Aromatically, it’s quite a wide, expressive style, with lemon butter, citrus and nectarine. Hints of gentle spice, nougat, clover blossom, marzipan, vanillin oak and crème fraîche. Savoury and showing a stony resolve on the palate, with a long draw of stone and citrus, grilled nuts and white flowers, and with the loveliest of mineral lines.”
