Description
The Credaro’s are a pioneering family, settling in Margaret River in 1922. They had humble beginnings building bridges for the first railways and major roads in the region. After selling their grapes for many years, the family have been commercially involved in the wine industry since the 1980s. The third generation, Robert and Phyllis, created the Credaro brand in 2009, and today, they produce all of their own wines, in their 1200-tonne winery.
“We have been making wine in the Margaret River Region since our great grandfather Cesare Credaro planted his first Fragola vines in 1922. Coming from Italy on a ticket sponsored by his brother Olympio, it was an act of kinship that brought us here to the beautiful land we have been farming and raising families on ever since. Cesare purchased a parcel of land in Carbunup for 1000 Crowns, and with his broadaxe and a jersey cow, set about making a livelihood in the fertile soil and cool coastal climate the region is famous for. To this day we harvest and bottle Fragola and continue to work side by side to make things better for the generations to come. In addition to Fragola, we have a range of varietals across our vineyards, and honour the land with our premium Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnays, which thrive in the region.”
Robert Credaro is Cesare’s grandson. Robert is now taking a small step back while still having a firm hand on the operations at large. Matt and Chris work closely together to oversee the vineyards and winemaking, driving the Credaro wine brand into the next century.
About this wine from the winemakers: “Kinship is the foundation on which the Credaro Estate is built. We celebrate the kinship of the two brothers that came from Italy to find a new life, and the kinship of all the fathers, mothers, sons and daughters that have worked together to build our legacy since then.”
“Fruit sourced from Credaro Kyella (Wilyabrup), Carbunup, and a premium Treeton grower. Whole bunch/berry pressed in the cool mornings to retain freshness. Wild yeast ferment, no fining no MLF. Matured nine months in French oak (barriques and puncheons, ~25% new) with regular lees stirring.
“After a warm, dry 2024 vintage, winter started late but August rains replenished groundwater and revitalised the vines. With careful management, they entered spring with healthy canopies. Flowering was strong across all varieties, though Chardonnay showed uneven shoot growth, requiring extra viticultural care for even ripening. Cool nights and the Gingin clone helped retain excellent acidity and deliver vibrant, flavoursome wines. Bird pressure and the need for netting were constant challenges, as warm conditions and limited water reduced Marri blossom, driving silvereyes and other birds into the vineyards.
“Bright, pale straw colour. Expressive and lifted aroma, classic white stone fruit combines with grapefruit pith, orange blossom, beautiful minerality, beeswax and a subtle hint of flinty wet slate. Complex and laden with layers of intriguing aromatics. Refined and mineral-driven, with generous fruit and fresh citrus acidity. Warm days gave richness of white peach, nectarine, and lemon curd, while cool nights preserved vibrancy. A supple talcy texture adds balance to this classic Margaret River Chardonnay.”
92 points, Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot “Early days for the 2025 vintage from Margaret River, but the signs are very promising (aren’t they always). Lemon/straw in colour, the nose is showing notes of stone fruit, honeycomb, grapefruit and nectarines with an appealing oak-induced nuttiness, reflected in some cinnamon and nutmeg touches. The wine has medium length, good balance, focus and juicy acidity. An attractive style which should drink well for five to six years and which certainly has room for further improvement.” March 2026.
