WINNER – Best Value Winery, James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion “The sheer quality of the wines he makes is equalled only by his consistency” James Halliday.

When I met winemaker Bruce Dukes from Domaine Naturaliste I was bowled over by how striking every wine was that I tasted in his lineup … A rare occurrence when you’re tasting wines every day. The success did not happen by accident.  He has an intimate knowledge of all the terroirs of Margaret River after spending 25 years honing his craft with leading Margaret River producers such as Pierro wines.  He is a trained agronomist and has a Masters in viticulture and Oenology from U.C. Davis … he also worked for 4 years at Neibaum Coppola in Napa, USA.  Bruce seeks freshness of fruit, perfume, texture, overall balance, restraint with low to moderate alcohol in all his beautiful wines. Domaine Naturaliste is named after the northern most Cape of Margaret River, Cape Naturaliste, where the winery is situated. Minuscule production of top shelf wines across the board.

2023 was an outstanding year for Bruce Dukes, taking out “Best in Show” for his 2020 Rebus Cabernet at the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards – If there is a ‘winning region’ in this year’s Top 50 Best in Show selection, it has to be Western Australia’s Margaret River”2023 Decanter World Wine Awards.

About the 2023 vintage from the winemaker“A sensational growing season. A moderate spring and start to summer allowed for slow and consistent flavour development, followed by a warm and dry finish leading into Autumn. The wines are bold and flavoursome, boasting exceptional concentration and intensity.

About this wine: Purus is a translation of pristine flavours, textures and the climate of southern Margaret River Chardonnay into wine.

The vines have been carefully managed to allow only dappled light into the fruiting zone. This promotes flavour development, low tannins and bright levels of natural acidity. The fruit is sourced from select parcels of Dijon clones grown in Karridale, cool southern end of Margaret River. The compact bunches of perfectly solarized berries are hand harvested at first light to preserve freshness of fruit.

Pure perfumes of white pear, jasmine flower and wet granite are elegantly suspended above a palate carved from grapefruit pith and white nectarine flesh. Lashings of focused white fruit tannin and porcelain texture and length culminate in a sheer wall of quenching minerality and bristling tension.

96 Points, Nick Ryan, Weekend Australian Dijon Clones of chardonnay 76 and 95, plus a little Clone 5 from California. This is precise and poised, etched out of crystal. Kinetic and tensile; hums with a high-frequency acidity. Candied lime and jasmine, white peach and grapefruit. An achingly pure acid line. Thrilling.”

96 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion “Feeling tired and sluggish? A glass of this pure, racy Purus will bring spark back into your life. It’s more than the refreshing acidity, which is moreish and energising, there’s a light film of citrus and white stone fruit, a little spice, a very fine layering of texture and oak. Superb balance and length. Love it.”

96 points Ray JordanQuite a different take on the Artus is this more classically defined modern expression of the variety. There is a pristine purity evident immedidately with a floral cut lime and pear lift on the nose. Then the palate coils and tightens as it extends through to a very long finish. An elegant wine with a purity and finesse that is so appealing.”

95 points, and Top 100 Australian Wines List for 2024 by James Suckling “The nose is wonderfully giving and inviting with complex aromas of lemon curd, orange blossoms, oyster shells and sea spray. The medium-bodied palate has high-tension acidity and generous mouthfeel, giving notes of grapefruit pith, jasmine and gunsmoke. Mineral with an uderlying power and salty finish. Very good.”
