2020 HALLIDAY WINE COMPANION AWARDS BEST VALUE WINERY OF THE YEAR
“The sheer quality of the wines he makes is equalled only by his consistency” James Halliday.
When I met winemaker Bruce Dukes from Domaine Naturaliste I was bowled over by how striking every wine was that I tasted in his lineup … A rare occurrence when you’re tasting wines every day.
The success did not happen by accident. He has an intimate knowledge of all the terroirs of Margaret River after spending 25 years honing his craft with leading Margaret River producers such as Pierro wines. He is a trained agronomist and has a Masters in viticulture and Oenology from U.C. Davis … he also worked for 4 years at Neibaum Coppola in Napa, USA. Bruce seeks freshness of fruit, perfume, texture, overall balance, restraint with low to moderate alcohol in all his beautiful wines. Domaine Naturaliste is named after the northern most Cape of Margaret River, Cape Naturaliste, where the winery is situated. Minuscule production of top shelf wines across the board.
“Margaret River Syrah is noteworthy because of its fragrance and attractiveness in its youth. A rachis (Latin botanical term) is the stalk to which the individual berries are attached to. This cuvee is so named because of the inclusion of 1/3 whole bunches (rachis) in the cuvee. The rachis contributes perfumes, tannin and flavours additional to the grapes.
The 2021 to 2022 growing season in Margaret River was one of the highlights in my 33 years of winemaking. Gentle and sustained sunny days provided fruit characterized by intense aromatics, coating natural acidity, and ultra-fine tannin and tension. The fruit gained lovely perfumes and textures while maintaining a magnificent verve. Pure Syrah. Spice, black pepper, gung pow tea and cherries. Whole bunches, whole berries, long cool ferment, gentle cap management. 12 months sur lie in 1/3 new 500L French oak puncheons. 14% alc. Cellar – Up to 10 years, but delicious in youth.” Winemaker notes.
GOLD and 95 points, 2024 Decanter World Wine Awards ” “Oozing prowess and decadence with its captivating dark berry and plum fruit and superb spicy, peppery infusion. Firm and meaty with a lengthy granite finish.”
95 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion “There’s so much power and intensity of flavour, it’s hard to know where to start. OK, how about the fabulous ruby-purple hue first, then the florals, baking spices, pepper and charry oak aromas, all flowing onto the full-bodied palate. Lots of poppy, bright fruit, especially plums and berries, an intriguing ferrous note in the mix, with tannins aplenty. More time in bottle to settle a good idea but hard to resist now.”
