WINNER – Best Value Winery, James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion “The sheer quality of the wines he makes is equalled only by his consistency” James Halliday.
When I met winemaker Bruce Dukes from Domaine Naturaliste I was bowled over by how striking every wine was that I tasted in his lineup … A rare occurrence when you’re tasting wines every day. The success did not happen by accident. He has an intimate knowledge of all the terroirs of Margaret River after spending 25 years honing his craft with leading Margaret River producers such as Pierro wines. He is a trained agronomist and has a Masters in viticulture and Oenology from U.C. Davis … he also worked for 4 years at Neibaum Coppola in Napa, USA. Bruce seeks freshness of fruit, perfume, texture, overall balance, restraint with low to moderate alcohol in all his beautiful wines. Domaine Naturaliste is named after the northern most Cape of Margaret River, Cape Naturaliste, where the winery is situated. Minuscule production of top shelf wines across the board.
In 2023 they took out “Best in Show” for his 2020 Rebus Cabernet at the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards – “If there is a ‘winning region’ in this year’s Top 50 Best in Show selection, it has to be Western Australia’s Margaret River” 2023 Decanter World Wine Awards.
About this wine from Bruce Dukes “Floris is a modern and engaging expression of our local clone into wine. This style is a coevolution of Modern Australian food and wine culture, which has great emphasis on balance, freshness and hedonistic pleasure. Floris exhibits delicate textures and floral notes reminiscent of white jasmine flowers.”
Gin Gin clone Chardonnay matured and fermented in 1/3 new French oak barriques for 10 months. Restricted malo‐lactic fermentation, battonage fortnightly to add complexity and texture through “sur lie” whilst retaining purity of character and freshness. For immediate enjoyment or cellar up to 5 years. 13% alc.
About the 2023 vintage from the winemaker: “A sensational growing season. A moderate spring and start to summer allowed for slow and consistent flavour development, followed by a warm and dry finish leading into Autumn. The wines are bold and flavoursome, boasting exceptional concentration and intensity. “
The 2023 was an exceptional vintage for whites, this is a super smart release.. mouth watering purity and balance!
94 points, Nick Ryan, The Weekend Australian “Promised floral notes make an immediate impression: jasmine blooming on muggy evenings, chamomile drying in the sun, a hedgegrow of elderflowers. White peach and lemon barley water too. Benefits from barrels with the lightest toasting.”
“The Floris (incidentally one of the best value chardonnays on the planet) is a vehicle for highlighting the white floral notes inherent in the Gin Gin clone of chardonnay so closely associated with Margaret River. Dukes selects barrels with the lightest possible toasting, from the Vosges Forest mostly, that he feels best amplify those characters.”
95 points, Jane Faulkner for Halliday Wine Companion “Gosh, Floris is charming this vintage. Pared back and refined, but charming nonetheless. A light showing of grapefruit and white nectarine, a flutter of ginger powder and gossamer-like creamy lees. Oak a mere backdrop. Moreish and savoury, and superb now, yet will last some distance.”
