Description
Top shelf chardonnay made by Curly Flat, the superstars of Victoria’s Mt Macedon. Is this Australia’s finest chardonnay? What a joy it is to drink this! Curly Flat owes its success to Phillip & Jeni Moraghan’s fanatical attention to the vineyard – one of the coolest grape growing regions in mainland Australia. The Moraghan’s belief of “ ..expressing the footprint of the vineyard rather than the thumbprint of the winemaking” is evident here – hence biodynamic practices and minimal additions in the winery. All this work in the vineyard reaps great rewards. Jancis Robinson MW (aka the queen of wine) is a big fan and James Halliday calls them “ the chardonnay and pinot noir superstar of Victoria’s Macedon Ranges”
96 Points, James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2017. “Hand-picked 26 Mar-14 Apr, whole bunch-pressed, fermented 11-16 days in French oak (43% new), matured for 18 months, 50% mlf. This is an exercise in lusciously layered complexity and power, taken only after endless trials over previous vintages, but also respecting the integrity of the fruit. Screwcap. 13.5% alc. To 2027”
96 points, Huon Hooke: “Bright, clear, medium to full yellow colour, with a cashew-nutty bouquet which is attractive, pure and fresh, laced with honey, lemon and grapefruit. The palate’s focus, searing intensity and freshness suggest it will age well and build in the bottle. Appealing spicy touches from the oak. Lovely wine, focused, concentrated and very long, with great potential.” Drink till 2026
93+ Points. Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front. “Curly Flat Chardonnay: a powerhouse of Macedon Ranges wine. Oak weighs heavily on the mind of this year’s release. It’s creamy oak, gently toasty, sweet-cedary. It’s matched of course to a power of fruit, mostly in the apple and grapefruit realm, with pine needles and white peach getting in on the action. It’s two years old but it feels two months old; it feels new and unresolved. If it’s to be consumed now, it needs or warrants a stint in the decanter. One thing this wine certainly does not lack is power. Tasted: Jul16 Alcohol: 13.5% Price: $50 Closure: Screwcap Drink: 2018 – 2024+”
