Description
Bannockburn Vineyards (25 kms north west of Geelong) have been one of the trailblazers of Australian fine wine for over 37 years. This is the new winemaker Matt Holmes’ inaugural 1314 and from this we can tell a great Australian Estate is clearly in safe hands. That makes him one-all with Michael Glover, whose 2014 was the preceding winemaker’s first and last release under this bottling. Holmes’ wine is a cracker. It’s aromatic and pulpy with fleshy nectarine and saline, rock pool scents, then full and textured in the mouth, lengthened by balanced acids and a very subtle hint of oak spice.
Drawn predominantly from the Stuart and Winery blocks, the fruit was handpicked between March 6-12. A portion of the fruit had overnight skin contact, but the majority was whole bunch pressed before (wild) fermentation in puncheons. Impressive.
93 points, Gary Walsh, winefront.com.au “The first release under new winemaker Matt Holmes, who started in 2015.What a powerhouse. Glowing yellow green in colour, white flower perfume, almond meal, green melon and ripe lime. It hits hard and firm, with a slippery texture, subtle warmth from alcohol, juicy sweet lime acidity, and a long nutty finish with a quartz-y kind of texture. Richness with a sense of responsibility.”
