Description
An historic Verduno estate that dates back as far as the 8th century. A true family affair Vittore Alessandria, his mother Flavia, father Gian Battista & uncle Ale have been working hard in recent years to give more precision to their charming wines: more leaves, fewer treatments in the vineyards, along with the investment into a battery of Swiss coopered Slavonian oak botti have all helped to give increased focus to the wines. Made in a traditional and non-interventionist way, the wines are fermented gently and slowly before elevage in large oak cask for three years. These are some of the aromatic, elegant and charming Barolos you’ll find.’
‘Vittore Alessandria’s 2016 Barolos are just as gorgeous from bottle as they were when I tasted them from tank just prior to bottling. These beautifully sculpted, translucent Barolos will thrill readers with classically leaning palates. Harvest for the single vineyards started with San Lorenzo, on October 12 and finished with Gramolere on October 19. Yields were pretty much in line with historical averages. As is the custom here, Alessandria gave the 2016s around 28 days on the skins, which is just a touch bit longer than the norm. Alessandria prefers to gently keep the cap moist and does not do submerged cap fermentation. The malolactic fermentation was done in steel, after which the wines were racked into cask, where they spent around 32 months prior to being bottled. Best of all, prices remain exceptionally fair for what is in the bottle. Alessandria remains one of my favorite under the radar estates in Piedmont.’ Antonio Galloni – vinous.com October 2020
Gramolere is a cru in Monforte d’Alba located between Gavarini and Bussia. With a southern exposure it has an altitude of 400 meters and is over 40 years old.
97 Points – Moncia Larner, RobertParker.com ‘If you consider the Barolo playbook at Fratelli Alessandria, the 2016 Barolo Gramolere takes the intensity and power up one more notch. You get black fruit and blackberry, but there is enough vibrant red fruit to keep this wine aligned with the more elegant and traditional side of Barolo. The wine shows compelling infinities with both the powerful and the elegant side of Nebbiolo. There are noticeable mineral notes and even a spot of savory salinity. However, Gramolere definitely has the power and inner grit to withstand long cellar aging. Only 7,000 bottles were made. Drink: 2022-2040’ Jul 2020
96 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous ‘The 2016 Barolo Gramolere is another striking wine in this range from Vittore Alessandria. It offers a fabulous combination of structure and depth that makes it easy to appreciate in the early going, in relative terms. Bright red berry fruit, chalk, white pepper, dried herbs and deep spicy notes are all laced together. Somewhat surprisingly, the Gramolere is the most approachable of the 2016s today, although I would not plan on opening a bottle for at least a few years. Drink: 2026-2041’ October 2020
