Description

Sons of Eden co-owners, Corey Ryan (“cut his teeth” as winemaker at Henschke for 10 years) winemaker and Simon Cowham (ex-viticulturist Yalumba) can do no wrong!

About this wine from the winemaker: The story behind the label:  “A story that has intrigued us for years is the fable of the legendary founders of Ancient Rome, Romulus and Remus. These twins were abandoned at birth and reared by a she-wolf. Romulus murdered his twin in a fit of rage over the naming of Rome, the city which both had built. Legend presents Romulus as the stronger, more powerful of the brothers, while Remus was more refined, focussed and elegant. We believe the twins’ characterise the distinctive and unique flavours and attributes of Shiraz from the twin valleys – the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley.”

“To qualify for the Romulus blend the vineyards need to over 50 years of age and managed sustainably. Fruit comes from 80+ and 60+ year-old vineyards in Light Pass sub-region and 60+ year-old vineyard in Menglers Hill sub-region of the Barossa Valley

“Hand harvested, destemmed and crushed into small 1.5 tonne open-top fermenters. The fruit was chilled for 5 days before being allowed to naturally warm to start fermentation. Various cap management techniques were used to highlight the unique characters of the individual vineyard parcels. After approximately 20 days on skins the ferments were pressed and transferred to a combination of new (45%) and seasoned French oak hogsheads. Matured for 18 months in oak without racking, the wines were then carefully blended, naturally clarified and bottled without filtration.

“Deep crimson in colour, with ripe cherry, plum and lifted red-licorice aromas. The palate is richly concentrated, with subtle structural tannins, finishing with excellent balance and length. The 2020 vintage was extremely low yielding, which produced full flavoured wines capable of maturing very well for many years to come .. Built to last .. optimum year 2030. Alc 14.5%”

Old Vine Barossa shiraz at its finest. A wine that is powerful, concentrated, intense (very true to its Roman mythological namesake) and yet smooth. Be sure to decant this wine for at least two hours or cellar it for a decade!

95 points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion “A deeply coloured shiraz from old vines in the Light Pass and Menglers Hill subregions, destemmed and matured in French oak (45% new) for 18 months. Blackberry, satsuma plum and red cherry fruit notes mesh with an array of fine spices and hints of pressed flowers, licorice, dark chocolate and earth. Lovely balance and fruit purity, with the pull of gentle sandy tannin and plenty of drive from the bright acidity. A great contemporary Barossa shiraz.”
