Bruce and Jeanette Tomlinson established Lenton Brae Estate in 1982. It remains family owned and operated with son Edward the current winemaker.
The site of the vineyard was chosen after a chance conversation with Bill Pannell. Bill was the owner of Moss Wood winery and producing wines that were renowned throughout Australia and overseas. During a casual chat between the two men, Bill opined that the soils of one of the newly created properties were uniformly excellent and equal to those of the existing Moss Wood vineyard. Suitably impressed, Bruce decided to purchase the property immediately to the north of Moss Wood. The varieties selected for planting in 1982 were Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet
Sauvignon and Merlot. Pinot Noir was also originally planted but was removed in line with Bruce’s decision to focus Lenton Brae production on the red and white Bordeaux wine styles.
From the winemaker … “This chardonnay is sourced from fruit grown on the estate vineyard in Wilyabrup. It offers a contrast to the Lenton Brae Wilyabrup Chardonnay, in being more accessible. Total ‘wild’ primary fermentation has added aromatic complexity and texture to the mouthfeel of the wine; barrel fermentation complements the flavour intensity and length. The wine was naturally settled and bottled without prior filtration. While still ‘fine’ and supported by ‘bright’ acidity it is approachable now and it will drink well in the short to medium term. Fermented in new and aged French Oak. Alcohol: 13.5%. Cellaring: 2026
Lively white stone fruit balanced with refreshing grapefruit and citrus zest. The subtle French oak adds a creamy texture to the lingering finish.
Review of 2016
92/100 Ray Jordan, The West Australian “A riper, nutty style of chardonnay from this challenging vintage. Has lots of nectarine and stone fruit with a splash of cutting lemon. Bottled without filtration and shows excellent complexity with a generous palate profile”
