Description
The Wilson family first planted their vineyard at Polish Hill River in 1974 and are now certainly one of the finest growers of Clare Valley Riesling.
From the winery … “A Classic style from our oldest vineyards in Polish Hill River, planted by John and Pat Wilson 40 years ago. Vines are small and spindly, cropping at minuscule yields due to the lack of available nutrient in the heavy clay soils. 100% handpicked fruit provides rich citrus flavours within a steely structure, tight with lots of minerality, as you expect from this area. Clare Valley Winemakers Wine of Provenance trophy (2014) is the latest accolade in a long line of awards given to this wine proving both it’s pedigree and age worthiness for those who have the patience”
Just when we thought 2019 was dry and then 2020 season came along warm temperatures until end of Dec and thankfully January cooled down which allowed grapes to ripen slowly, holding great natural acidity with some welcome rain at end of Jan to set grapes up nicely for harvest … 80% reduced yield, super quality… very little to go around so be quick !
Review for 2018 … 96 points, James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2020 “Single site, hand-picked, chilled, whole-bunch pressed. The mouthfeel is particularly good, reflecting high quality fruit to start with, and thereafter gentle handling in the winery. Purity and the Polish Hill River sense of place both underpin the wine.”
