John Vickery (the ‘godfather of riesling’, creator of famous Leonay riesling & 50 plus year career-50 Trophys & 400 Gold Medals!) now in his 80’s has come out of ‘retirement’ to create his own label & collaborate with Phil Lehmann (son of late Peter Lehmann one of Vickery’s best mates).
Riesling lovers should not miss out on this Eden Valley riesling of pedigree and class made in goreous flavoursome but delicate Vickery style. Love the price – worth stocking up!
Fruit for the 2016 Eden Valley Riesling grapes were sourced from two of the Zander family sites located in the Flaxman’s Valley area of Eden Valley. Both the Kosi and Quarry blocks are low-yielding and produce fruit with intensity of flavour and lovely natural acidity. The 2016 blend also saw the addition of fruit from both the Mason and Riley family vineyards. These vineyards are home to fifteen, and seventeen, year-old-vines respectively, and produce fruit with lovely purity and excellent structure – features essential for John Vickery!
Fragrant – green limes and grapefruit, mineral and ethereal, fresh spring water cleanliness. Lovely bright flavours; fresh lime juice, sherbet but with terrific focus and bright minerality to the flavours. A long, fresh palate. A Riesling with beautiful purity and prettiness in youth, though promises to be a wonderful wine to age – 10+ years.
96 points James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2017 “From 15-17 yo low yielding vines from the Zander, Mason and Riley Vineyards, each parcel fermented separately in stainless steel before final selection and blending. Gleaming straw-green, classic young Eden Valley riesling, its citrus aromas and flavours on the midpoint between lime and lemon, the acidity flowing calmly on in the wake of the fruit, purity the watchword.”
Max Allen, The Australian “John Vickery is to Australian wine what Don Bradman is to cricket: a bloody legend who set the standards by which all others are judged — except John’s still alive and still making wine, in conjunction with Phil Lehmann, son of another deadset legend, Peter Lehmann …. the Eden Valley is also beautifully pure, precise and focused, with a little less of the juicy grapes and more of the citrus cut … mouth-wateringly delicious now but you can be confident they will also age slowly and deliciously across the next 10, 15 even 20 years.”
94 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “Textbook Eden Valley Riesling. It’s mineral with a subtle lavender perfume, spice, grapefruit and lime. Clean and direct, pure acidity and visions of mineral water flowing over stones, if you take my meaning. The finish is clean, crunchy and very long. Beautiful wine. Dead set bargain. You could even twist my arm to rate it one point higher, maybe.”
