James Kellie (formerly of Howard Park) has had extraordinary success in a relatively short time, winning trophies galore and for 10 consecutive years the elusive 5 red star rating (the highest recognition possible from James Halliday’s, Wine Companion awarded to Australia’s top 5% of wineries for “a consistent record of excellence”.).
The Great Southern wine growing region of WA provides unmatched versatility and quality for a winemaker. From the elegance and delicacy of cool climate Riesling to the restrained intensity of Denmark Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The texture and richness of Mount Barker Cabernet and the structure, weight and complexity of Frankland River Shiraz. Harewood Estate showcases this potential in a range of wines produced from grapes grown in select, low yielding vineyards.
The grapes for the Harewood Estate Porongurup Riesling are sourced from one of the older Riesling vineyards of the Porongurup subregion in the Great Southern of Western Australia.
Only the finest pristine free-run juice is used in the production of this wine, resulting in a palate of outstanding finesse, free from the harsh, phenolic characters and deeper colours associated with grape pressings. A long cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks, followed by minimal fining and an early bottling, all aim at capturing the inherent delicacy of the regional characteristics of the variety.
A brilliant, exceptionally pale straw colour with youthful green tinges on release. The wine exhibits fine floral and citrus notes enhanced by an underlying flinty vibrancy. An elegant, seamless palate starts with flavours of green apple and grapefruit, followed by a crisp mid-palate with an underlying slate like character, and as finished with classic mouth-watering lemons and limes. The fine structure is testament to the care taken during the production.
This wine is enjoyable on release, but a 1-2 year rest in the bottle will allow the wine to show its character more. It is also a good candidate for those enjoy more mature Riesling flavours that develop from mid- to long term cellaring.
95 points, Huon Hooke “Pale colour and a very lifted fragrant aroma reflecting some yeast esters as well as delicate lemon, citrus fruit. Floral, also. A beautiful perfume. The wine is very fine and delicate on the palate, crisp and lively, lean and rapier-like in its cutting edge. The frisky acidity easily balances the trace of residual sweetness. Very long finish.”
