“Yves Cuilleron is a superstar of the Northern Rhône” thewinedoctor.com
In 1987 Yves took over his family wine estate (after 4 generations) located in Verlieu (in the town of Chavanay) and since that time he has built an entirely new winery. He has acquired additional vineyards (domaine is now 52 hectares) that cover appellations, including Saint Joseph, Cote Rotie, Cornas, Condrieu, Saint Péray and a series of Vin de Pays from the Collines Rhodaniennes.
His philosophy in the vineyard is simple and very much a sustainable approach, no insecticides/pesticides only organic ones, majority is high density planted (competition between vines enhances fruit quality), handpicked fruit (much of vineyard is on terraces). Similarly in the winery a natural approach: wild yeasts, no additions, open fermenters (temperature controlled), maturation in french oak barriques and foudres (his wines are more about purity of fruit and he goes easy on the oak).
Saint Peray is the southernmost appellation of the northern Rhône Valley, producing only white wines, with part of the production being produced as sparkling wines.
About this wine from the winery: 50% Roussanne, 50% Marsanne. Blend of plots from the historic terroirs of Saint-Péray. 9 months of aging in barrels and tuns. The color is clear and light yellow. The nose expresses the freshness of the fruits, a beautiful tension appears from the nose. The palate is balanced, we find the tension appeared on the nose. Notes of candied lemon and mirabelle plum. This wine can be enjoyed on the freshness of the aromas over 3-4 years. To be enjoyed with a seafood platter. Alc. 13.5% vol.
90 Points, Vinous Media “The medium straw-hued 2023 Saint-Péray Les Potiers makes an entrance with shy yellow apple, flinty accents, cedar and a touch of honeysuckle. The 2023 shows acceptable flavor concentration and boasts ample freshness on the palate, concluding with good energy on the bright finish. This is a classic Saint-Péray that can be enjoyed from the start.” Nicolas Greinacher, Nov 2024
