Description
Renowned winemaker Mark Warren (aka Honeybear) wears a couple of hats – he’s winemaker at Happs wines in Margaret River and wine chemistry lecturer at Curtin University.
He has serious fun at the experimental edge of his finely honed craft with his Marq wines and is producing some classics in the making using alternative grape varieties. Chenin Blanc was the original grape of WA that was the backbone of all WA’s whites in the 80s & 90s and thankfully it is having a wee resurgence of late. The aim was to produce a Chenin Blanc style that shows complexity with wild ferments, low sulphur, high solids, barrel fermentation and old oak aging were all means to this end.
This fine Chenin Blanc hails from Karridale … close to Augusta at southern tip of Cape in the cool Margaret River’s south with oceans to west and south). 2015 was a particularly low yielding vintage (due to frost and wind) which delivered depth of flavour.
Mouth filling citrus, stone fruit with more-ish oyster shell, ground nuts and spice. Terrific depth of fruit, complexity with lipsmacking acidity and freshness here that cries out for seafood!
