“TOP 100 PRODUCERS OF FRANCE FOR 2019”
”One of the most talented winemakers in the Loire – he farms his 40 hectares in a method close to biodynamic. His whole range of wines have drive, and are regularly among the best wines in and around Saumur. The whites have remarkable finesse and are extremely delicate. Also, they are chenins that are agreeable young, which is sufficiently rare as to be emphasized. His reds are at the same level. Good vine age counts for a lot, his talent just as much. A benchmark winery!” Bettane & Dessauve 2019 – Top 100 Producers of France.
Today, Arnaud’s holdings encompass some 50-odd distinct parcels spread across the appellations of Saumur and Saumur-Champigny, each one a unique terroir with a different aspect and topsoil overlaying the famous tuffeau limestone of the region.
It all started in 1996 when Arnaud’s father Yves established Domaine de Saint-Just, named after the neighbouring village Saint-Just-sur-Dive, just 5 minutes down the road from both Brézé and Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg. In 2005 Arnaud joined his father at the domaine, taking it organic in 2009 (certified in 2012) and adding eight clos parcels (walled vineyards) from the Château de Brézé in the same year. In 2017, all the wines were consolidated under the Arnaud Lambert label and in 2018, Arnaud moved the domaine to biodynamic viticulture (in conversion).
From vines averaging 65 year old on silt soil over limestone. Vinified with indigenous yeast after separating free run and press juices and aged in a combination of older foudres and barrels. Bottled after 12 months ageing on fine lees and shows very immediate lifted fruit on the aromas and palate. Very clear expression of fruit with building intensity and very good length and shape on the palate. Ample substance here to enable this wine to age for 5+ years. Arnaud describes that he is looking for wines that show no oxidation that are clean and pure.
This has amazing depth of fruit and reminds me of white burgundy .. meursault perhaps… What a delicious bargain!
91 points Rebecca Gibb MW vinous.com June 2023: ‘The 2021 Saumur Champigny Les Perrieres displays a lightness of touch. With a low pH, this dry Chenin is pure and precise. Fermented in foudres and older barrels over ten months, subtle pastry flavors join the quince-like and citrus fruit. While delicate it blossoms in the mouth before concluding with a fine line of tantalizing acidity.’
