Description

Founder and owner, Lindsay McCall, established the vineyard in 1985. He is lauded as one of the region’s handful of pioneers. He bought an old north-facing orchard and planted The Paringa vineyard. At an elevation of 140 meters it curls around the landscape like a vinous amphitheatre, sheltered from the harsh southwesterly winds. The deep, rich volcanic soils give power, flavour and structure to the wines. The vines are reaching their peak of maturity too, and this is a crucial factor in producing wine of the highest quality. In 2007, Paringa Estate was awarded the innaugural “Best Winery in Australia,” in the ‘James Halliday’s Wine Companion’ book – an astonishing achievement for someone with no formal training in viticulture or winemaking.
About this vintage from the winemaker: “The fruit for this wine came from our ‘Estate’ vineyard, and our Callanan’s Road vineyard. The fruit was handpicked, whole bunch pressed, and the unclarified juice was fermented in French oak puncheons (35% new). It was stirred monthly in barrel, to build weight and complexity.

“The nose is complex and nuanced. Vibrant aromas of citrus pith and white stone fruit mingle with notes of struck flint. The palate is racy and textured with bold citrus flavours, and a long mineral finish.”

93 points, Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate ” … concentrated and intense, full of salted nuts, flowers and saline acidity. There is plenty of wine here – i.e., it is full of flavour and long through the finish – and yet it manages restraint as well. This is a classy wine, very attractive.”

95 points, Stuart Knox, The Real Review “Straw yellow shines through the glass. Ripe peach, roasting nuts and flinty mineral aromatics. Bright, powerful and weel defined across the palate with peach fruits, lemon zest and a creamy nougat centre. Great length, acidity is well integrated, working to drive it without poking out as it runs very long and finely detailed at the finish.”

94 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “This will live and mature – well – for yonks. It’s a direct, linear, complex chardonnay with length to burn. It tastes of grapefruit and grilled peach, flint and steel, cedar and fresh, juicy pears, and while it sits slightly on the lean side at this early stage, it will blossom given time.”
