Description
Paringa Estate is one of the jewels of Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula wine region, consistently making some of the nation’s leading examples of Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Chardonnay.
Founder and owner, Lindsay McCall, established the vineyard in 1985. He is lauded as one of the region’s handful of pioneers. He bought an old north-facing orchard and planted The Paringa vineyard. At an elevation of 140 metres it curls around the landscape like a vinous amphitheatre, sheltered from the harsh southwesterly winds. The deep, rich volcanic soils give power, flavour and structure to the wines. The vines are reaching their peak of maturity too, and this is a crucial factor in producing wine of the highest quality. In 2007, Paringa Estate was awarded the innaugral “Best Winery in Australia,” in the ‘James Halliday’s Wine Companion’ book – an astonishing achievement for someone with no formal training in viticulture or winemaking.
The Peninsula label represents the first tier in the Paringa Estate range. In recent years Paringa has renewed its focus in ensuring the Peninsula range over delivers on quality.
“The quality of these wines are often equal to many other vineyards best” – James Halliday
Fruit for these wines is sourced from the Estate managed vineyards in Red Hill, and from a few other carefully selected vineyards around the Peninsula. These wines are an exceptional expression of the Mornington Peninsula style, with the emphasis on lively fruit.
In the winery berries were de-stemmed and co-fermented with 5% viognier in two-tonne open fermenters. It was then aged for 11 months in seasoned French oak barriques. This is a classic fine cool climate shiraz.
A perfumed nose with lifted aromas of black pepper and blueberries, leads onto a beguiling palate. Plush blackberry and red fruit flavours are framed by fine grained tannins. The finish is long and savoury.
“Excellent dark red-purple hue; this is smoky with lots of charry oak in the mix, although there is bright fruit, lots of spice and vitality thanks to the acidity. It feels ripe and fleshy across the palate with kirsch and dark plums; firm tannins are a little raspy, even brutish, on the finish. Tame them with a chargrilled steak.” 90 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion.
