Description

Top shelf chardonnay made by Curly Flat, the superstars of Victoria’s Mt Macedon. Is this Australia’s finest chardonnay?  What a joy it is to drink this!

Situated in the cool climate of Victoria’s Macedon Ranges Curly Flat has long been regarded as one of Australia’s finest producers of Pinot Noir. Curly Flat owes its success to Phillip Moraghan and Jeni Kolkka’s fanatical attention to the vineyard started in 1989 – one of the coolest grape growing regions in mainland Australia…perfectly suited to chardonnay and pinot noir.  The site with its elevation of 560 metres and location south of the Great Dividing Range produces innately high natural acidity. 100% estate grown fruit, biodynamic practices, no herbicides, natural fertilisers and fastidious attention in the vineyard, picking only ripe fruit has reaped rewards. Jancis Robinson MW (aka the queen of wine) is a big fan “… some of the finest Australian Pinot Noir I have encountered..” and James Halliday calls them “ the chardonnay and pinot noir superstar of Victoria’s Macedon Ranges”.  Jenni took full ownership and operation of the winery in 2017 and the winemaking is now in the capable hands of former Shadowfax winemaker, Mark Harrop.

About this release from the winemaker: “2017 .. a year of moderates. Not a day over 40 degrees, warm days extending into February and March coupled with cool nights giving us slow, steady (perfect!) ripening conditions. This season without extremes allowed great balance and elegance in our Chardonnays, as well as the citrussy line of acid that you’ll be familiar with.

An aromatic nose of white stone fruit infused with fragrant lime blossom and fennel along with hints of struck match and wheatmeal which provide further complexity.

Nectarine, white peach, and pear merge with grapefruit citrus, all lining up to be embraced by the cool charge of acidity. Subtle French oak and creamy lees provide both a savoury and textural frame for luxurious length. In unison, these elements form a palate of great vitality while maintaining tension and focus. Drinking now and over the next 8 – 10 years.”

94 points, Toni Paterson, The Real Review “I adore the energy and the purity in this wine. Fruit is the hero in this wine with faint white peach and lemon flavours. Oak sits nicely in the background, providing gentle support but not crowding the fruit in any way. I love the way the acidity heightens and lengthens the flavour. Most of all, there is room to grow and evolve with time. Delicious.”

95 points, Jane Faulkner for James Halliday 2020 Australian Wine Companion “This has punch and weight in equal measure. Fuller-bodied with stone fruit, lemony tones, creamy and very moreish thanks to its restrained nutty/leesy flavours. There’s complexity and a vibrancy to the acidity as it glides effortlessly to its long finish.“\

94 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “It was released in May but the time to open it is not yet upon us. This is super young. It feels tight and lean when you first open it; it blossoms as it breathes but of course extra time in bottle is what it really needs. Macedon wines don’t like to be rushed. White peach, citrus, hazelnut praline, a certain chalkiness, a suggestion of smoked bacon. It’s not a show pony but it’s going to be an absolute ripper in time.”
