Description
This is the second label of Curly Flat which is widely regarded as one of Australia’s finest producers of Pinot Noir. Comprises more of the fruit forward Mariafeld clone and other pinot barrels that don’t quite make the grade for Curly Flat. Excellent quality and value here for this 2017 release.
Situated in the cool climate of Victoria’s Macedon Ranges Curly Flat has long been regarded as one of Australia’s finest producers of Pinot Noir. Curly Flat owes its success to Phillip Moraghan and Jeni Kolkka’s fanatical attention to the vineyard started in 1989 – one of the coolest grape growing regions in mainland Australia…perfectly suited to chardonnay and pinot noir. The site with its elevation of 560 metres and location south of the Great Dividing Range produces innately high natural acidity. 100% estate grown fruit, biodynamic practices, no herbicides, natural fertilisers and fastidious attention in the vineyard, picking only ripe fruit has reaped rewards. Jancis Robinson MW (aka the queen of wine) is a big fan “… some of the finest Australian Pinot Noir I have encountered..” and James Halliday calls them “ the chardonnay and pinot noir superstar of Victoria’s Macedon Ranges”. Jenni took full ownership and operation of the winery in 2017 and the winemaking is now in the capable hands of former Shadowfax winemaker, Mark Harrop.
About this release from the winemaker.. “Red berried fruits lead with delicate black cherry featuring throughout. Forest tones ranging from the canopy down to undergrowth provide both freshness and a subtle earthen core. Gentle oak inputs provide supple support in the form of spiced vanillin and cocoa. Focused red and black fruit flow across a subtle foundation of dusty tannins. An energetic and textured palate leaves a lingering savoury mid palate of good depth and interest. Drink now and over the next 5+ years. 13.3% alc.”
“I often find the Macedon Ranges can be quite Burgundian in style, Vosne-Romanee to be precise with floral aromatics of lifted red cherry and spice that works with a tautness of acidity that frames the fruit on the palate. The wine holds a tension between red cherry fruit and more nuanced earth and rhubarb characters. Tannins are fine but persistent and add a savoury dimension that’s short lived when oak derived spice makes itself known on the finish. Pinot Noir of this quality shouldn’t cost $29. Back up the truck.” 93 points, Patrick Eckel, winereviewer.com.au.
“When the entry-level Pinot Noir looks like this, it’s exciting to wonder where the top brass sits. This is a fab drop for $29. Wild yeast fermented with a mix of new (18%), second, third and fourth use oak was used. A dense type exuding autumn leaves, undergrowth, dark cherries, dense plums and flashes of blackcurrant. Superfine to taste, spiced fruit rides a long and and moreish finish capped off with bright acidity. Top stuff.” 91 points Steve Leszczynski, Q Wine.
Extraordinary purity of fruit and balance here!
