Situated in the cool climate of Victoria’s Macedon Ranges Curly Flat has long been regarded as one of Australia’s finest producers of Pinot Noir. Curly Flat owes its success to Phillip Moraghan and Jeni Kolkka’s fanatical attention to the vineyard started in 1989 – one of the coolest grape growing regions in mainland Australia…perfectly suited to chardonnay and pinot noir. The site with its elevation of 560 metres and location south of the Great Dividing Range produces innately high natural acidity. 100% estate grown fruit, biodynamic practices, no herbicides, natural fertilisers and fastidious attention in the vineyard, picking only ripe fruit has reaped rewards. Jancis Robinson MW (aka the queen of wine) is a big fan “… some of the finest Australian Pinot Noir I have encountered..” and James Halliday calls them “ the chardonnay and pinot noir superstar of Victoria’s Macedon Ranges”. Jenni took full ownership and operation of the winery in 2017 and the winemaking is now in the capable hands of former Shadowfax winemaker, Mark Harrop.
About this release from the winemaker: Violets, black cherries and wild raspberry swirl. Scents of undergrowth and potpourri enhance complexity to form a rich, fragrant and savoury nose.
A luscious energetic palate awash with fine tannin coalesce into a scaffold of impressive structure. Kirsch characters intersect with cocoa and black pepper. Swirls of vanillin spice flourish to a lingering finish. Approachable now but undoubtably one for the cellar. An easy 10, if not 15 years lay ahead.
Red and black cherry fruit, more of the former being bedded down with autumnal savoury charm. Impressively silky mouthfeel as good structure and length assuredly chimes in. Drink 2020-2026. “Alc. 14.2%
17+ points, Jancis Robinson MW “Transparent ruby. Heady violets on the nose. Fresh ferny fruit. Lots to chew on but the fruit is emphatic enough to handle it. Racy and crunchy but still youthful.”
95 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “It’s the sternest, crunchiest, most brooding Curly Flat Pinot Noir I can recall. It’s routinely a wine of heft, and cellar-worthiness, but this release is a rock.
Tannin, acid, fruit and oak all combine to powerful effect. It’s simultaneously slippery smooth, creamy in fact, and surly; it’s like an approaching cold front: beautiful, intense, intimidating. We have spice, alpine herbs, orange rind and stewed black cherries. We have acidity forming a clear stream. We have sets of tannin. This is a monty for the cellar.”
