Description
Sons of Eden co-owners, Corey Ryan (“cut his teeth” as winemaker at Henschke for 10 years) winemaker and Simon Cowham (ex-viticulturist Yalumba) can do no wrong!
About this wine from the winemaker: “The story behind the label: “A story that has intrigued us for years is the fable of the legendary founders of Ancient Rome, Romulus and Remus. These twins were abandoned at birth and reared by a she-wolf. Romulus murdered his twin in a fit of rage over the naming of Rome, the city which both had built. Legend presents Romulus as the stronger, more powerful of the brothers, while Remus was more refined, focussed and elegant. We believe the twins’ characterise the distinctive and unique flavours and attributes of Shiraz from the twin valleys – the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley.”
“To qualify for the Romulus blend the vineyards need to over 50 years of age and managed sustainably. Fruit comes from 80+ and 60+ year-old vineyards in Light Pass sub-region and 60+ year-old vineyard in Menglers Hill sub-region of the Barossa Valley
“Hand harvested, destemmed and crushed into small 1.5 tonne open-top fermenters. The fruit was chilled for 5 days before being allowed to naturally warm to start fermentation. Various cap management techniques were used to highlight the unique characters of the individual vineyard parcels. After approximately 20 days on skins the ferments were pressed and transferred to a combination of new (45%) and seasoned French oak hogsheads. Matured for 18 months in oak without racking, the wines were then carefully blended, naturally clarified and bottled without filtration.
“Deep crimson in colour, with a vibrant array of black-cherries, red-liquorice and sweet spice aromas. The palate is powerful and fleshy, with a dense red fruit core wrapped in velvety tannins enduring with length. The 2021 vintage was a stand out for old vine Shiraz, produced full flavoured wines capable of maturing very well for many years to come. Built to last – optimum year 2034. Alc 14.5%”
Old Vine Barossa shiraz at its finest. A wine that is powerful, concentrated, intense (very true to its Roman mythological namesake) and yet smooth. Be sure to decant this wine for at least two hours or cellar it for a decade!
98 points, Sam Kim, Wine Orbit “The captivating bouquet shows dark fruit intensity, floral, toasted spice, game and fine oak aromas, leading to an impressively concentrated palate offering multi-layered mouthfeel, wonderfully structured by silky texture and layers of supple tannins. Energetic and luxurious with refinement and structure, finishing seamless and persistent.
95 points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion “Bright red and dark plummy fruits cut with exotic spice, violet and jasmine top notes, licorice, dark chocolate and Barossa earth. Detail and line are recurring themes in the SoE wines; nothing overblown or over the top, just pure, spicy fruit, a graceful passage across the palate and a distinct regional thumbprint. It’s drinking nicely now but will improve with careful cellaring.”
95 points, Andrew Caillard MW, The Vintage Journal “Deep crimson. Opens with an array of blueberry, mulberry, blackberry along with hints of toast, vanilla and savoury earth. Plush, full-bodied and well balanced with a slightly ferrous backbone of fine tannins. Layers of savoury flavours unfold alongside the medley of forest fruits. Excellent intensity and concentration, all tightly in.”
