About this wine from the winemaker: This wine is part of Howard Park’s Distinguished Sites range. The Howard Park Leston Shiraz was created from a selection of the best batches of Shiraz grown on our Leston vineyard (specifically, blocks 4 and 17) which is located in the Willyabrup subregion of Margaret River. The soils in this vineyard are shallow lateritic gravels over sandy, clay loam.
Small parcels are handpicked, and all batches are sorted to remove matter other than grapes, prior to fermentation. Fermentation occurs in open vat and closed stainless steel fermenters with diligent cap management to extract fine fruit tannin and strong varietal flavour.
92 points, Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion “Fruit from the Leston vineyard and selected parcels around the Wilyabrup area. Matured in French oak for 18 months (25% new). The cool 2019 season has left an indelible mark on this wine: it is delicate and poised, ready for drinking in the short–medium term. It is an elegant expression of Margaret River shiraz, wonderfully light on the oak impact in the mouth.”
92 points, Ray Jordan “This wine is just starting to hit its straps now. It was a pretty cool vintage in Margaret River, but the fruit intensity and structure is very good. On the nose you are struck with a mix of dried herbs, plum and lifted cherry and raspberry. The palate is still firmly clinging together with chalky tannins and well-managed oak in play. The good thing is that it has plenty of life in the tank.”
92 points,Kasia Sobiesiak, The Wine Front “Caramel vanilla oak comes first, filled with ripe black cherries and blackberries, sweet in the flow, gravelly, stony texture and then lemony acidity giving it all a big lift. The tannins are of fine dark cocoa powder nature. There’s lingering exotic five-spice, aniseed, cumin and nutmeg releasing a type of bitterness and loads of dark chocolate feel giving your mouth a big pucker. Robust and flavourful wine.”
