Description
Howard Park, one of Western Australia’s pioneering wine families with a 30 year history and two generations of tireless work of the Burch family, they specialise in the state’s premier grape-growing regions of Margaret River and the Great Southern. They are also part of Australia’s First Families of Wine (AFFW), an exciting collective of 12 multi-generational family-owned wine producers.
Winemaker Janice McDonald was awarded Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year for 2018. Peter Forrestal, of Gourmet Traveller said “Janice McDonald is an astounding winemaker: demanding of herself and others; rigorous; painstaking in her attention to detail.”
Howard Park began its sparkling program in 2006 after years of fascination with Champagne. Their goal was to make world class sparkling that showcases the pristine, continental, cool climate of Mount Barker in Western Australia’s Great Southern region.
Inspired by the world of ballet by Jeff Burch’s siblings dance careers (his brother David worked as principal dancer with Australian Ballet and sister with West Australian Ballet) they named their sparkling range ‘Jete’ (a signature ballet movement requiring time, dedication and commitment to create the illusion of boundless control) engaging the same ballet principles to create wines of finesse, refinement and elegance. Their commitment to quality is strong with installation of method traditionelle bottling line.
100% Estate grown Chardonnay, hand picked early from cool climate vines of Pemberton and Mount Barker to capture fine pristine acids, delicacy of fruit. 100% free run juice for base wines matured in stainless steel & older french oak, partial malolactic fermentation. Method traditionelle, minimum 18 months on lees imparts more-ish hints of bready, biscuity texture and complexity. 12% Alc
From the winemaker: “White blossom, Pink Lady apple, Bartlett pear, cumquat, freshly baked patisserie and a hint of sea spray greet the nose, forming a bright and refined bouquet. A creamy, vibrant mousse fills the mouth with fine bubbles that burst with freshness, unleashing flavours of juicy citrus and orchard fruit. Rich layers of flavour and texture are counterbalanced by a lemon-like acidity that washes across the palate and lingers on long after the first sip.”
We were bowled over by this seriously smart blanc de blancs sparkler with its pristine citrus, green apple freshness and long mouthwatering finish.
Gold medal – 2018 Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships in London (Up there alongside the top echelon sparklers in the land including House of Arras, Domaine Chandon, Clover Hill)
93 points, Angus Hughson, Wine Pilot “If you were going to pick a region to make super Blanc de Blancs sparkling wine then the Great Southern would have to be one of your go to regions thanks to its mix of both a cool climate and beautifully pristine environment which give superb purity of Chardonnay fruit. Mid straw in colour with a dusting of gold, it opens with beautifully elegant and precise aromas, from nectarine to florals and citrus well balanced with just cooked pastry bottle age influences. The palate is then bright, fresh and vibrant with a light, silky touch and crisp acid backbone before opening up to a soft finish accented by touches of buttered toast. A delicious aperitif, at any time of the day.”
91 points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review “This bottle was fresh stock, the latest edition of this non-vintage wine, Nic Bowen’s first since taking over as chief winemaker, and it really over-delivers. Straw-hay, toast and poached stone-fruit aromas, with a subtle but definite trace of cracked yeast character. Intense and very dry on the palate, refreshing and clean throughout. Medium length, and there’s an appealing richness at its heart. A food-style sparkling wine that has strength and balance. It’s amazing value.” 21 June 2023.
