Flametree Wines has had a meteoric rise to become one of the star wineries of the Margaret River wine region. Under the skilled winemaking of Cliff Royle (ex-Voyager Estate) the quality of wines are impressive across the board.
James Halliday … “Flametree, owned by the Towner family (John, Liz, Rob and Annie), has had extraordinary success since its first vintage in 2007. The usual practice of planting a vineyard and then finding someone to make the wine was turned on its head: a state-of-the-art winery was built, and grape purchase agreements signed with growers in the region. Show success was topped by the winning of the Jimmy Watson Trophy with its 2007 Cabernet Merlot. If all this were not enough, Flametree secured the services of winemaker Cliff Royle.”
A blend of 70% Tempranillo, 30% Shiraz
About this wine from the winemaker: “Both batches were machine harvested in the cool of early morning. The Tempranillo was transferred directly to press retaining a large percentage of whole berries whilst the Shiraz was crushed and chilled before being transferred into the press. With the Tempranillo rotated the press a few times and then the grapes sat for three hours releasing flavour and tannins from the skins. With the Shiraz, and used just the free-run juice in the blend. The Tempranillo pressings were fined, wild fermented in old oak and then used in the final blend for texture and weight. Both ferments were kept cool to preserve the fruit flavours and freshness.
“The 2022 Flametree Rosé has a distinctive pale salmon colour. Aromas of red currents overlay subtle floral, cherry and cranberry characters. The fruit flavours are a little more obvious and forward in this lovely early drinking vintage, the difference between using Tempranillo and Pinot Noir as Rose material. The palate however is deliberately savoury and textured, a result of wild ferments in old barrels and 4 months on yeast lees. The palate has moderate weight, soft chalky tannins and a dry finish. A wonderful wine to enjoy at a picnic, dinner party or day at the beach. Pairs perfectfully with olives, cured meats and crusty bread.”
92 Points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion “If crisp and dry, textural and refreshing are what’s wanted in a rosé, here it is ready to be chilled, poured and enjoyed. Nicely spiced red fruits and tangy juicy acidity are here, too. Delicious.”
