Description
Flametree Wines has had a meteoric rise to become one of the star wineries of the Margaret River wine region. Under the skilled winemaking of Cliff Royle (ex-Voyager Estate) the quality of wines are impressive across the board.
S.R.S. stands for Sub Regional Series. Carefully selected individual grape varieties that excel within a certain sub-region. These wines represent the very best varietal wines under the Flametree Wines label and will only be made in the best vintages, volumes will be small and availability very limited. Exceptional in quality, complexity and finesse.
Notes from the winery about this wine: 100% Margaret River Chardonnay. After overnight cold storage the fruit was whole bunch pressed into French oak puncheons before undergoing full wild yeast fermentation. To achieve a portion with high grape solids we rotated the press after filling. The key to successful wild fermentation is the use of high turbidity juices, minimal sulphur dioxide, low alcohols and juices with good nutrient content. The SRS Chardonnay was barrel fermented in 40% new French puncheons and then aged for 10 months.
The 2022 SRS Chardonnay shows lovely lifted fruit together with some delicate savoury notes from solids and wild ferment. Grapefruit, white peach and dried pear give way to barrel ferment and funky match stick complexities. Fine fruit flavours in line with a cooler vintage, wild barrel ferment and subtle sulphides contribute a delicious savoury oyster shell/saline character on the palate, giving the wine greater complexity and overall purity. This modern style ultimately complements many Australian food flavours, particularly seafood.
96 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion “Powerful yet superfine, long, detailed and rich, although there’s a tension throughout with penetrating acidity. In other words, complexity aplenty. It’s also moreish thanks to the sulphides, the excellent citrus-toned fruit, wave of oak spice adding to what is a superbly balanced wine.”
95 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “Excellent release. True to style and true to form. Grapefruit and white peach, thistles and bacon fat, nectarine and steel. It’s powerful, cool, textural and lengthy, with an emphatic quality to it, an off-hand command. I was convinced from the first sip and all the way through.”
