5 Red Star Rated Winery – Australian Wine Companion
Top 100 Wineries 2023, Halliday Australian Wine Companion “Quiet achievers are often the keepers, and the wines of Collector Wines are exactly that. Canberra’s Collector Wines never seems to make a great deal of fuss and yet every year, in the glass, it’s showtime, with gorgeously funky chardonnay and stellar cool-climate shiraz as its flagbearers ..” Campbell Mattinson.
Collector Wines are a boutique wine producer. Grapes are grown on the characteristic lean pink granites and reddish shale loams of the Canberra District and Tumbarumba. The wines are hand-made for balance, character and depth of flavour.
Alex McKay started Collector Wines in 2005 with just a handful of cool climate shiraz and a determination to make elegant, long-lived wines. Fast forward to today, and they are known for wines that sing with a purity of regional expression and varietal definition.
About this wine from the winemaker: “The 2022/2023 growing season commenced with good spring rains, giving way to a temperate summer. Mild, cool conditions through to harvest yielded beautifully clean, vibrant, and juicy Sangiovese grapes.
“Sangiovese is grown at Tumblong (Gundagai) (ironstone-rich red loam) and Murrumbateman (Canberra District) (granite & red loam over shale). Sangiovese grapes were hand-harvested in the cool of the morning in March, and early April. The grapes were whole-bunch pressed, yielding just the barest pink colour in the juice. A moderately cool fermentation was undertaken before preparation for bottling.
“The wine is fresh on the nose with aromas of mandarin, cherry, rose-water and spice. The palate is crisp, with moreish mid-palate texture and mouth-watering acidity. Great for seasonal drinking with antipasti!”
95 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion “An enticing pale copper-pink blush with a flutter of florals and warm spices. Redcurrants and cherries come through on the palate, so, too, the juicy and crisp acidity setting up a freshness throughout. A lovely rosé on its own or with food.”
94 points, Stuart Knox, The Real Review “..Pale and bright rose-gold hue with an aromatic lift of crushed red berries and dried herbs. Light and fresh on the palate with bright red berries, dried herbs and a hint of dusty tannins bringing tension and drive. Good length and ample refreshment. A delightful summer wine.”
