5 Red Star Rated Winery – Australian Wine Companion
Top 100 Wineries 2023, Halliday Australian Wine Companion “Quiet achievers are often the keepers, and the wines of Collector Wines are exactly that. Canberra’s Collector Wines never seems to make a great deal of fuss and yet every year, in the glass, it’s showtime, with gorgeously funky chardonnay and stellar cool-climate shiraz as its flagbearers ..” Campbell Mattinson.
Collector Wines are a boutique wine producer. Grapes are grown on the characteristic lean pink granites and reddish shale loams of the Canberra District and Tumbarumba. The wines are hand-made for balance, character and depth of flavour.
Alex McKay started Collector Wines in 2005 with just a handful of cool climate shiraz and a determination to make elegant, long-lived wines. Fast forward to today, and they are known for wines that sing with a purity of regional expression and varietal definition.
About this wine from the winemaker: 100 % Shiraz from Hilltops.
“The 2021/2022 growing season commenced with good spring rains, giving way to a temperate summer. Mild, cool conditions through to harvest yielded beautifully clean fruit and ripe tannins.
“Shiraz is grown on a number of elevated sites with deep granitic loams in the Hilltops region. Grapes are harvested at around 13 Baumé, to capture freshness and purity at optimal ripeness. The destemmed grapes are open-fermented and worked with remontage and délestage. Malolactic fermentation and maturation takes place in Allier and Tronçais oak before blending and bottling at 12 months age.
“Lifted violets, red fruits, ripe cherry and gentle spice yield to a palate of dark plums, sweet fleshy tannins and a long, resonant finish. Decant before serving.”
Gold Medal, ICC Sydney NSW Wine Awards, 2023
“The colour is a fabulous dark purple-red; juicy and tangy fruits a little sweet and sour too. Not a fruity wine as such as there’s a savoury overlay with some jamon-like reduction, woodsy spices and Alpine herbs. It feels cool on the medium-bodied palate, furry tannins, and finishes on a high note.” 90 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion
