Description
Situated 4km west of the Wairarapa town of Masterton, Wycroft Vineyard is on the silt/loam and gravel terrace built up by the adjoining Waipoua River. The Masterton district pioneered New Zealand’s first successful vineyard in the late 19th century until the prohibition movement forced its closure. Only in the last 30 years have vineyards been replanted in Masterton, nearby Gladstone and Martinborough, and the region is now a world recognised producer of fine wines.
The top Dijon clones are close planted on low fruiting wires in the intensive Burgundian manner, low cropping levels ensures only premium fruit is harvested. Some bottle age has given this even more appeal…
Huon Hooke got excited about it and awarded it 95pts “A limited production, reserve level pinot from Wairarapa, near Martinborough, this is a delicate, ethereal yet succulent style of pinot, with lovely strawberry and cherry fragrance, a hint of confectionery and a palate that builds towards the finish in a classic peacock’s tail . Delicious.” SMH Good Living Wine. 19/4/11.
NZ Wine Writer Raymond Chan … 17 out of 20. “Made by Guy McMaster of Urlar winery in restaurant-friendly style, this has fruit from clones 114, 115, 667, 777, Abel and 5 totally destemmed and fermented to 13.5% alc. the resultant wine then aged 10 months in 30% new French oak barrels. Light, bright ruby red in colour, this has a fresh, but rather reticent bouquet on initial nosing. Delicate florals and red fruits emerge in the glass. On palate, this is an elegant, lively, red-fruited wine with excellent acidity providing a crisp edge to the mouthfeel. Fine-grained tannins mean good line and this will become more rounded and fuller over the next 3-4 years. A good wine to enjoy with Asian influenced poultry and pork dishes. 170 cases made. Nov 2010″
