Description

Port Phillip Estate is a specialist Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir producer located on the Mornington Peninsula, one of Australia’s foremost cool-climate maritime wine regions. Meticulous sustainable viticulture and sensitive minimalist winemaking produce site-expressive wines of elegance, complexity and structure. Port Phillip Estate wines are domain grown, vinified and bottled. “We endeavour to grow the highest quality fruit that expresses the terroir of each vineyard. Our sustainable farming practices are driven by the belief that the health of our vineyard soils, and thus vines, underpin wine quality.  All grapes are hand pruned, shoot thinned and hand picked.” Winemaker Glen Hayley

“Since becoming chief winemaker at Port Phillip Estate a few years ago, Glen Hayley has taken the estate’s already good wines to new levels of quality and detail.” Max Allen

About this wine from the winery:  “Quartier means neighbourhood in French and the Quartier varietals are a celebration of diverse terroirs on the Mornington Peninsula. The fruit for this wine was sourced from vineyards in Tuerong and Balnarring.

“The fruit was fermented in open vats. Fermentation occurred spontaneously with ambient yeasts and lasted 16 to 18 days. The wine underwent indigenous malolactic fermentation. The maturation period was ten months in French oak barriques, puncheons (7% new), and large format foudre. The wine was bottled without fining and with minimal filtration.

About the 2024 season … “Exceptional efforts from our viticulture and winery teams ensured the timely delivery and processing of fruit. While yields were below long-term averages, the conditions proved favourable for pristine and optimally ripe fruit.”

“This wine offers a lively mix of aromas, led by wild strawberries, cranberry and pomegranate. Subtle green spice, earthy notes, and a touch of toasted oak add depth to the bouquet.  The palate is soft and juicy, with vibrant red fruit flavours. Hints of leafy herbs and spice provide complexity, while supportive tannins and a bright line of acidity lead to a smooth, refreshing finish. 12.5% alc.”

Very smart Pinot, great purity, red fruited, normally only sold through fine restuarants!

Review for 2023 .. 91 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front This is a good ‘bistro’ style of Pinot Noir, and I don’t mean to damn it with faint praise here, because there’s a role for this kind of wine that delivers good Pinot flavour in an approachable and juicy, affable, style. Strawberry, raspberry, a little cut green capsicum and spice, some rosy perfume. It’s juicy and lively, oak seems to be a very minor part of the wine (good), and it’s all about red fruit, supple tannin, a little bit of sap and greenery in the mix, with a gently dusty finish of good length. It’s kind of simple, but enjoyable all the same, and I do like a wine that does not try too hard to be anything other than a nice thing to drink, and this is that. It’s clean and fresh, and for pure enjoyment, I’m pushing the score up to 91 points.”
