Description

If ever a winery was born with blue blood in its veins, Tolpuddle would have to be it.” ***** Star Winery, James Halliday Australian Wine Companion.

Tolpuddle Vineyard took its name from the Tolpuddle Martyrs: English convicts transported to Tasmania for forming an agricultural union. The leader of the Martyrs, George Loveless, served some of his sentence working on a property near Richmond, part of which is now Tolpuddle Vineyard. Located about 20 minutes drive from Hobart, in Tasmania’s south-east, the Coal River Valley has established a reputation for growing exceptional quality grapes. With a climate that is at the cool extremes for viticulture in Australia, it is no surprise that Chardonnay and Pinot Noir perform so splendidly. And yet the rainfall is significantly lower than many of Australia ‘s other cool climate regions with an average of approximately 500mm of rain per year. This cool but relatively dry climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly in autumn without disease pressure that heavy rainfall can bring.

Established in 1988 by local farmers the Casimaty family joined forces with two of Australia’s foremost wine business trailblazers Garry Crittenden and Tony Jordan to plant a vineyard to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Purchased in 2011 by leading producers Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith who say they never set out to purchase a vineyard in Tasmania but upon seeing the site were immediately impressed by it ‘s near perfect growing conditions. “Buying a 20 year old vineyard in a location like this and this well set up it just isn’t the kind of thing that comes along very often.” says Hill Smith. “Tasmania is a remarkable place to grow grapes …climate is cool and dry – ideal conditions to grow Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of exceptional quality. We believe Tolpuddle will be a great Australian single vineyard.”

Their inaugural Pinot Noir release in 2012 gained the attention of international wine dame Jancis Robinson rating it 18/20! The follow up vintage in 2013 won 3 trophies at the London International Wine Show and has continued to be recognised as one of Australia’s finest –and most highly sought – pinot noirs.

From the winemaker about the 2022 vintage: “The coldest vintage we have experienced in more than a decade. Cool conditions especially around the time of flowering resulted in a combination of low yields and concentration of flavour. These cooler conditions which persisted throughout the entire growing season culminated in great natural acidity, now synonymous with Tolpuddle Vineyard fruit.”

“A very strong year for Pinot Noir at Tolpuddle. There is complexity and power, balanced by pure fruit notes and cool season spice. It shows powerful fruit, with ripe red cherry, smoked meat, and olive notes, framed by fine but firm tannins. Great length of flavour. An exciting vintage. The grapes were all hand-picked and fermented as a combination of whole berries and whole bunches, in open fermenters, with gentle pump-overs and plunging. The wine was aged in French oak for ten months, of which about one third was new.”

98 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review  “Impressively deep, rich purple-red colour, unusual in Australian pinot noir. The bouquet is loaded with black cherry, blackberry and spice aromas, a hint of smoky oak adding charcuterie and fivespice nuances, while the palate is voluptuously full and rich, decadently flavoured, with luxurious flesh and fruit, abundant fine/soft tannins and terrific length. There are some whole-bunch nuances which are beautifully incorporated into the wide array of flavours. A totally convincing and thoroughly impressive Aussie pinot noir to compare with the best in the world.”

96 Points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion “Tolpuddle has firmly cemented its position at the pointy end of the Tasmanian pinot noir pyramid, consistently producing knockout wines that have become a benchmark for the region. Nothing changes with the 2022 release, which shows wonderful fruit intensity and oodles of pinosity in a graceful package. Lovely pure dark cherry and wild strawberry fruits, cut with exotic spice, charcuterie, roasting game, shiitake broth, amaro herbs, purple floral tones and complex forest floor notes. Textural and elegant yet with an undercurrent of latent power and intensity, a tight tannin frame and a long finish that shows balance and poise. Just wonderful stuff.”
