Description

Over 30 years of experience working with chardonnay and pinot noir have established La Crema as a winery of consistent quality in the USA. La Crema produces wines from top cool-climate appellations to include; Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, Monterey and most recently Willamette. The unifying factors of all these sites are their cool, windy climates and marine-based soils.

La Crema’s vineyards are all harvested by hand in the cooler morning hours. The winemaking techniques are primarily traditional with modern enhancements to ensure that the wines are true to both the variety and the terroir. Chardonnays are whole-cluster pressed and fermented and aged in French oak on the lees with bi-monthly battonage to add texture and complexity. The Pinot Noirs are cold soaked for five to eight days before fermentation in small, open-top fermenters and aged in a combination of new and used French oak barrels. As with the Chardonnay, La Crema’s Pinot Noirs are pure, accurate and reflective of their origin. Outstanding vineyard sources, limited yields and artisanal wine making produce wines that receive high acclaim.

From the winemaker, Jennifer Walsh “Our original name, La Crema Vinera, means “best of the vine,” setting the standard for all we do since 1979. Our family-owned and operated winery focuses exclusively on cool-climate appellations, passionate in our belief that they make uniquely expressive and elegant wines.”

The home of La Crema and the heart of Sonoma County Wine Country, the Russian River Valley AVA is one of the world’s premier wine-growing regions. One unique element of the area is the Pacific Ocean’s maritime influence which moderates the warms days of the growing season allowing grapes to ripen and develop slowly. The unique weather patterns combined with a diversity of well-draining soils make the appellation well suited to produce cool-climate Pinot Noir.

The grapes were picked by hand in the cool of the morning before being gently sorted and destemmed. Once in the tank, the grapes were cold-soaked for 3 to 5 days before being inoculated with selected yeasts. Fermentation was allowed to proceed with punch downs performed daily for increased depth of color and flavour expression. Grapes spent approximately 14 days in the tank before free run wine was drained from the skins. After 24 hours of settling, this wine was put to barrel in 100% French oak where it spent a minimum of 14 months before being racked, blended and bottled.
The Russian River Valley has an excellent growing season in 2021. A relatively dry winter exacerbated drought conditions and resulted in a much lighter crop compared to average. Spring was relatively cold and peppered with freeze events both pre and post bud break. A warm dry summer provided ideal growing and ripening conditions mostly in the absence of extreme heat spells. The heat did arrive early to mid August and drove early ripening in some of our warmer vineyard sites. As noted, drought conditions resulted in lower Pinot Noir yields but created intense aromas and flavors in exceptional fruit, the resulting wines show vibrant aromatics and great concentration of flavor.
Review of 2019 – 93 points, Decanter Harmonious aromas of summer fruits, cola, dark cherry and plums. Precise on the palate with savoury notes and a lovely fine-grained tannic structure.”
