Description

The Indigo Vineyard is located 12km’s from Beechworth in the foothills of the Victorian Alps. Wine has been produced in the area since 1950 when the Brown Bros vineyard was planted at Everton Hills. The Indigo Vineyard was planted in 1999. The vineyard site is at an elevation of 350 metres with 46ha of vineyards planted to 11 varieties, including the top French and Italian grapes. The business sells about half of it’s fruit to Brokenwood wines, where Indigo wines are made by Marc Scalzo and and Stuart Hordern. The finest parcels of shiraz fruit from the vineyard are selected to go into this wine.

The hot days and cool nights, granitic sand and clay loam soils and a location in foothills of the Victorian Alps combine to create an amazing terroir for growing super premium grapes.

About this wine from the winemaker:  “Fruit was hand-picked and about 25% whole bunches were used in the ferment. Maturation was in French oak with 30% in new oak and the balance in barrels of varying age from a variety of coopers. Minimal intervention is required to maximize pinot characters and to allow the soils and the character of the region to be displayed.

Bright, intense berry flavours to develop: perfect for this fruit driven style. Much less oak influence than its big sister wine (Secret Village Pinot Noir) means the Blue Label is a fresher, lighter style…This is dangerously delicious!

93 points, Jeni Port for Halliday Wine Companion “Shiraz and pinot noir duke it out for top red wine spot in Beechworth and they’re hard to separate, especially in a year like 2022. Pinot shines here, quite literally, in glistening red cherry hues. The scent is aromatic and sweet in wild raspberry, cherry, plum, clove. Combines a purity of fruit with a touch of earthy, leafy savouriness, bringing added depth to the palate. Structurally firm and well-textured, it remains fresh, full of energy. It should do well in the journey ahead.”
