Description

“The wines are pure and splendidly rich. A new star.” — Clive Coates M.W.

Regarded as one of the rising stars of Burgundy, David Duband took over his family domaine (Hautes Cotes de Nuits located just west of Nuits-St-George at altitudes up to 400 metres) at very young age and now has more than 20 vintages of experience behind him. Starting with very small family holdings  David with his business partner Francois Feuillet, have added to his portfolio of wines through the purchase of some exceptional old Grand cru vineyards throughout Gevrey Chambertin and Morey St Denis.

David has adapted his work in both the vineyards and cellars and in the last few years and is producing wines with not only remarkable finesse and detail but also exhilarating intensity and freshness. Working organically in the vineyards and with low levels of S02 in the cellar he also uses a relatively high percentage of whole bunch ferment and a low percentage of new oak for ageing and this is adapted to each wine as it needs. This results in wines of striking purity with fabulous depth and intensity without sacrificing the details of the origins of each parcel of grapes. These are wines showing terroir and the soil signature of the fruit for each parcel above all else. These are wines that are built to age classically and gracefully.

This wine comes from vineyards close to the winery in Chevannes – named in honour of David’s son, Louis-Auguste. The high altitude combined with some of the domaine’s oldest vines (over 55 years in age) tends to produce a wine of concentration, especially in warm vintages. A cuvée that never disappoints, it’s clearly outperforming in 2020.
”A ripe and very fresh nose combines notes of various red berries with those of spice and floral wisps. There is fine volume and richness to the round and generously proportioned flavors that terminate in a mildly tangy and lingering finish. To enjoy after only a few years of cellaring. 2023+” Burghound, January 2022

2023 is here and it is on song!

Reviews 2023 vintage: ”David Duband feels that 2023 has worked out as a ripe, but not hot, vintage, and certainly his own wines bear this out. He started picking just after the heatwave, from 11th September, with degrees from 12.5% to just under 13.5%. The wines bear the hallmark of classical pinot elegance. He continues to evolve his practices in order to achieve this. The wines are now fermented without sulphur, and he employs regular foot treading to break up the cap rather than the more vigorous punching down. The whole bunch vinification is deftly applied so that it does not over-influence the taste of the wine despite the high proportions – 60% for the village wines, 75% for Premiers Crus and 80% for Grands Crus.” Jasper Morris M.W., Inside Burgundy, January 2025

Super smart offering from this excellent grower… recommend decanting this now or lay down in the cellar for a year or two.

Mostly in Stockinger foudres. The plan is to move in this direction for 80% then use new barrels for 20%. Good sound purple with a very fine red fruit bouquet and adequate intensity. There is bounce from the stems (60%) with unexpected darker fruit, then good weight behind, with fair grip. Drink from 2026-2028. Tasted Nov 2024. (87-89)” Jasper Morris M.W., Inside Burgundy, January 2025
