Description
Hahndorf Hill’s six-hectare vineyard is located at the edge of historic Hahndorf village and on the slopes of a gentle hill which, over a century ago, contained a slate quarry. It is very apparent when walking along the slopes of the vineyard blocks at Hahndorf Hill that slate forms a significant part of the mineral component of the soils.
The vineyard topsoils consist of a sandy-loam and red-clay blend, richly embellished with blue-red slate, quartz and ironstone intrusions. The subsoils comprise deep red clay. This abundance of diverse mineral components in the soil translates into a distinct mineral element in all their wines, which is especially beneficial for their Austrian varieties – such as Gruner Veltliner – at which they excel and have pioneered over the past 25 years.
The Adelaide Hills’ slow ripening, cool-climate environment allows for all their grapes to benefit from an extended ripening season with beautifully warm days and cold nights. This diurnal variation is a significant quality defining factor according to producers of these varieties in their native Austria. Hahndorf Hill believe in environmentally sustainable methods to bring out the finesse and vitality in their wines.
About this wine from the winemaker: “Purposefully drawn from the elegant red varieties of the Adelaide Hills, picked early to retain fine acidity and delicate colour at pressing. Leaning on estate grown fruit, the bespoke blend brings both balance and character to this wine. Made the contemporary dry Rosé style; savoury, softly fruitful and textured.
“Blend of Trollinger, Shiraz, Zweigelt, Blaufrankisch, Saint Laurent and Pinot Noir. Fruit was selectively hand picked and chilled overnight. The fruit was membrane pressed using a traditional gentle cycle that reduces phenolic extraction. This gentle pressing cycle allowed the free run juice to extract flavour without harsh tannins or colour. After several days, the juice was carefully racked away from solids before tank fermentation at cool temperatures. The dry wine was stabilised, filtered and bottled to capture freshness and fruit expression.
“Aromas of vibrant red berries and summer fruits, layered with notes of baked custard tart and a dusting of nutmeg. The palate is delicate and red fruited with pomegranate, fresh strawberries and whipped cream leading to a refreshing, juicy finish.”

93 points, Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion “The main X-factor in this wine is the unusual ballast of trollinger (a red variety from Germany) grapes, grown on the estate property. This is a swishy, lighter-weight, dry and mostly savoury style that leans into pickled cherry, light rosé vermouth botanical characters, and pleasing bitterness of that. A little almond note and some dried sage leaf characters, too. A lighter, finer, delicate and dry pink wine of immediate appeal and interest.”
